Randy Johnson got robbed...

What a screw job. You ask anyone who'd they'd rather have as a pitcher. In fact I can't think of any pitcher I'd rather have to pitch one game for me than Johnson. It's not his fault his team sucked ass and couldn't get him any wins.

ERA:
Johnson #2 with 2.60
Clemens #5 with 2.98

WHIP:
Johnson #1 with 0.90
Clemens #8 with 1.16

BAA:
Johnson #1 with .197
Clemens #4 with .217

Ks:
Johnson #1 with 290!
Clemens #5 with 218

Wins:
Clemens 3-way tie for #2 with 18
Johnson 3-way tie for #5 with 16

Jason Schmidt before he got hurt. But yeah, Randy deserved the Cy Young

well i kind of disagree. RJ had a lot of strikes out but the wins weren't there (mostly due to low run support). Santana should have won 🙂

Seriously...do you know anything about the Cy Young award, or should I say Cy Young awards.

Ha, pwned badly.

Johnson should've had it, but I bet you that every writer who wrote an article saying how he'dget robbed ended up voting for Clemens.

...I thought the Cy Young was voted on by the managers.

This is nothing new. Everyone always looks at wins as a defining statistic for a pitcher when in fact, wins are one of the last things you should look at when determining a pitchers success. Lets use a couple examples:

Pitcher A: 18-9, 5.00 ERA
Pitcher B: 14-10 2.80 ERA

While improbable, the above situation is completely possible. Just because Pitcher A wins more games does this make him a better pitcher? No, it simply means he was lucky enough to play for a team with a potent offense that scored enough to make up for his inadeqacy on the mound. If I'm making choices, give me the pitcher with the better individual statistics regardless of how many games he's won.

Yep. It's just like how the MVP is usually the best player on the best team (or more likely, the player with the best stats on a contending team) rather than a guy who would be the difference between 3rd in a division and 5th.

please stop posting in baseball threads

and yes, Randy Johnson should have won, but this is baseball, and these awards are never fair. Only in baseball could someone do something as statistically impressive as win a triple crown (1st in BA, homers, rbi) and not win the MVP (ted williams).

no, putting your team in position to win matters most. Pitchers don't go 9 innings anymore, they have very little control on their win total.

Of course, making that freaky commercial where Clemens and Johnson morph into each other should disqualify them both. 😛

I haven't slept since.

Santana will win the Cy Young award, hands down. It better be unanimous too. When do they announce AL, thursday? I thought the best point made against Clemens was this:

Look at the stats. Roger had only 2 more wins than Randy and Randy beat him in the other 4 categories -- and these are the categories that he can actually control. How Randy could not get the Cy Young is beyond me. And how it was such a large % in favor of Roger boggles my mind even more. Perhaps b/c Randy is so dominate year in and year out he gets overlooked a lot:

ERA:
Johnson #2 with 2.60
Clemens #5 with 2.98

WHIP:
Johnson #1 with 0.90
Clemens #8 with 1.16

BAA:
Johnson #1 with .197

wow i thought the race would be closer. But I remember ESPN saying that what was hindering Randy was the number of losses he had, not the win total.

Yup. There was some crazy stat they showed about Randy's year. I think he was almost required to hold the other team to less than 2 runs to get a win. He lost 9 quality starts (at least 6 IP, no more than 3 ER). 4 of those were 2 runs or 1 run too. What is he supposed to do? With the team he had, even he was probably one of the better hitters.
