Ran into a punk kid at McDonald's today.

I believe he could easily get enough to live on just based on that. Even so, he's in a wheelchair, indicating problems unrelated to his mental issues, and his (declared) income almost certainly qualifies him for welfare and food stamps. That's just the basics. There are probably many more programs that I'm not remembering or was ever aware of.

He gets food stamps and then what? He's still homeless. You can only stay in a shelter for so long and you need an address to mail those benefits to.

Also, subsidized housing has LONG waiting lists.

you're name wasn't even mentioned and yet you knew you were the queen. fascinating.

1) I 95% positive I am the only female in this thread
2) Nintendessert doesn't change his troll often.

Why was that guy begging in the first place? My tax dollars go to many programs that he could avail himself of to avoid hanging out at McDonalds waiting for handouts. Why should I be expected to give him money on top of the money I'm already giving him?

Scrooge said something similar in A Christmas Carol. Attitudes like yours are what is wrong with America. Everyone acts like they really understand someone else based on nothing more than first impressions until they actually try living in their shoes and getting to know the individual.
Sure some are deadbeats, but then your no better than anyone who would have judged this kid...like the OP apparently did initially.

Ohhhh man!! If our anger queen keeps posting this thread is definitely going places!

😀

Edit: I just scrolled up and glanced at the posts. Goodness, talk about hard core pwnage/being bitch slapped multiple times by multiple posters in this thread. ROTFLMAO.

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt" - old proverb

So true, indeed.

You're still too old to troll almost every thread.

But...that's just like, your opinion, man. 🙄

So, I am a troll because I didn't give kudos to the OP? I started a discussion, I participated in it, I remained civil to everyone despite some people obviously being mad that I called the OP for being a follower and not a leader.

I don't think I have ever gone into a single thread and not shared my opinion that was related to the original post and the discussion at hand.

You not liking what I have to say doesn't make me the troll.

He gets lunch from McDonalds and he's still homeless. What's your point? He could rent an apartment for what he could get on welfare. I think you can get the equivalent of what a $15 per hour job pays or close to it. I rented an apartment on far less than that in my youth. It wouldn't be a great apartment, but what do you expect? Not only that, but he can still make $1000 per month doing other things and qualify for welfare. That's plenty of money.

I lived for 2 years working a shit job that paid me less than $300 every two weeks and somehow managed to get by. Hell, I would have qualified for welfare then, but never took advantage of it. I lived frugally, paid all my bills off the top of every check, and got a library card for internet and entertainment. I made it and I never had to beg anyone for anything. It took away a lot of my sympathy for people I see begging though. I know it's within their capability to live better than I did then and to do it practically in perpetuity.

You being a perpetual troll makes you a troll. Me not liking what you said, and whining at the OP for trying to be a nice guy, just makes you bitchy.

Well, I guess you should go ask the OP where to find this guy...it sounds like you have this all figured out. How much do you think the guy could get in benefits. Despite what you read in P&N...it is NOT that much. He has no kids to feed, he is single and he is male....he is not about to be getting $1000/m in welfare. No way. More like $300/m. Probably less than that. Someone actually sourced a chart from the government about the average amount a family of 4 receives on welfare and it was something like $300-500/m....so, actually the homeless dude would probably get a lot less than that ($300/m).

His best bet is subsidized housing...and the waiting period is atleast 3-5 years for some communities.

The "punk" was the nice guy. The OP just looked like he was trying to redeem himself. Clearly it bothers you that I am not kissing his feet.

If that makes me bitchy....*shrug* and that saying about sticks and stones.

By the way, you're derailing the thread. Aka "trolling".

Even though I disagree with some of her opinions, I still think she makes this forum a better place.

I didn't say anything to infer otherwise, but comparing the OP to the worst villains in history, just for offering to buy a guy lunch, is being bitchy.

No one said anything about kissing his feet, highness. He behaved like a human being, which is neither praiseworthy or condemnable, it's the way an adult should behave in public. OTOH, his reaction was much more admirable than, say, yours in this thread.

but comparing the OP to the worst villains in history, just for offering to buy a guy lunch, is being bitchy.

What a stretch! When did I compare him to the worst villains in history?

Again, he did not offer to buy the (homeless) guy lunch...he originally ignored the guy and only offered to pay for the kid's tab after the kid (whom the OP judged as a "punk" because of his appearance) showed himself to be a compassionate and thoughtful person.

OTOH, his reaction was much more admirable than, say, yours in this thread.

Sure sure. I am such a horrible person for calling him on not helping the homeless man from the jump. :\

OH, he offered to pay AFTER he saw the "punk" come in and offer to help the guy the OP walked past earlier.

My bad, the OP deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

I'm actually a great person.

I am sure the guy in the wheelchair was grateful that the kid came in, noticed him immediately and offered to help him instead of going about his business.

Keep throwing out those insults because you have nothing mature to say. 🙂

There is something wrong with you. I'm not trying to insult you, I'm just being observant.

take a moment to re-read the op's original post:

now, the op did NOT ignore him. the op was in one line, wheelchair guy in another. "punk" shoots past the op when the wheelchair guy asks "punk" for 25 cents. i'd like to think if the op was asked for 25 cents he might have done the same thing "punk" did. we don't know, and you giving him shit doesn't change that. either way, when "punk" did what he did, i believe the op was so moved by the gesture that he offerred to buy both their meals.
if you got your head out of your ass long enough, you might be able to comprehend.

I work in a weird part of town that has a lot of businesses/wealth but is also *impoverished*. You are guaranteed to run into a begger on a lunch break. Sure enough I spotted a guy in a wheel chair with obvious mental deficiencies at the counter at the McDonalds.

^Not sure how or why you cannot see the obvious attitude expressed in that one little snippet..maybe your head is in your ass too.^^

You're right, the OP definitely sounded like he gave a damn about the guy when he saw him. He sure sounded like he would have given the guy a quarter if he asked 🙄

The OP came off as judgmental. He judged the kid and he judged the guy in the chair. THAT is why I called him out for what happened.

Sometimes it's better to admit you might be wrong.....or you can keep on posting and enjoy getting keel-hauled, your choice..

So, you want me to back down from my opinion so these guys could feel better? I could care less. If "keel-hauled" means dealing with emotional posters trying to call me names cause they think I'm being mean, whatever.

You know you just did what you suspect other people were doing.

Good catch, lol. 😀

But overall the story is a win, thanks for the post.

I thought it was going to be in the other direction and what came to mind is numerous 'atypical' looking kids I've met that were very sensible and normal beyond their styles. Good to see another story with a positive experience.

still can't comprehend the moral of the story, can you? but you keep on posting your holier than thou crap. who the hell are you to call the op judgemental? he didn't judge anyone. you did. you judged the op. and convicted him. sorry to get in your face God.
