Ran automated X1900XT Overclock and got surprising results...

Check out THIS picture.

I ran the automated overclock utility in the ATI CCC and am a little confused. It looks like everything maxed out with a temp of 54 degrees. ISn't the XTX clocked at 650? My XT was 621 originially and now it is at 690 - is that good?

I'm unfamiliar with the overclocking potential of these cards - can anyone fill me in on how this result compares with the norm?

Thanks!

um, it looks underclocked cause thats the 2d speed. If you look at the requested speed that would be his 3d frequency

Yea, I got the exact same results on mine.
But dont trust it man, soon after it crashed on COD2, and I started seeing weird things like people floating about etc. Funny thing is, with the OC'd card, even at decent temps it still performed exactly the same as, or worse then default speeds.

After a few days use back and forth from OC'd to default, when I ran the test again it hardly OC'd my memory at all! In other words, depending on when you run the utility, merits what your results are like. Run it when your systems cool, and it will OC it to the max, run it when your systems hot, good luck on that memory OC.

The memory just gets ridiculously hot, and may even be damamged as a result on my system. As I ran 3DMark05 again at default, and got only 98**k when previously I got 10,4** on default speeds. Lucklily I'm getting a replacement, but the moral of the story is, theres no need to OC unless you enter benchmarking competitions :p

Saying that, I'm thinking of giving ATI Tool a try, perhaps with the voltage tool and manual fan controls I could get a stable OC?

ATI Tool is the best way to oc these new X1900XT's IMO. Make sure you use Beta 13 or 14 as they seem to have fixed most of the bugs in those releases.

This is the configuration I've found to work the best for me:

Cat 6.2 beta without CCC
ATI Tray Tools (basically acts like the control panel only better)
ATI Tool beta 13

When you install ATI Tray Tools make sure that you disable the overclocking feature it will ask you about or it won't initialize properly.

Make sure you disable ATI Hotkey and ATI Smart services (Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services) and reboot before you start to oc. By disabling the two services you stop the ATI drivers from switching back and forth between 2D and 3D clocks.

After rebooting, just adjust the voltage to where you want it (under Settings and Voltage Control in ATI Tool). 1.4V on the core is stock for 3D mode and the other voltages stay the same so you don't need to mess with those until you've had some time to become familiar with ATI Tool and the limits of your card. Most guys feel that 1.45-1.475V is pretty safe with the stock cooler as long as you keep the temps down (probably <80C to be safe).

After setting the voltage go back to the main window of ATI Tool and now you can adjust clock speed. Make sure you set the clocks after you change them. You can check for stability by using the artifact scanner built into ATI Tool or by running through 3DMark03/05 a few times and watching carefully for artifacts. That doesn't guarantee stability as some games will tax the card in different ways, but it will be very close.

Hope that helps.

Can you guys link to a site for downloading the 6.2 drivers? The auto update gets a crap connection and would take about 3.5 years to DL the whole thing.

Weird. The Anandtech posting software automatically added stuff to my link. Should be fixed now.
