Yep it's silly. There always seems to be one component in your new build that is overpriced. Now it's the memory. Before it was the GPU due to mining. Before that it was hard drive shortages. When do the PSU and case builders get to have their chance at the profit trough?
Only now it's the memory AND the GPU!!! /firstworldproblems

I remember buying 2MB RAM in the WIN3.1 days for like $150.

Are you implying that we should be stockpiling PSUs for the inevitable future? Maybe that'll be my fast lane to millions.

Samsung did recently say, "Oh, there's a DRAM shortage? I guess we'll work on producing more." So, maybe it'll eventually settle down. :p The problem is that we had a DRAM shortage earlier this year, and then we saw huge stockpiles being purchased by mobile companies like Apple to build their new phones.

I remember I needed a 1GB SD card back in 2006. I went to eBay and paid $80 for it. Now you can get a massive SD card or USB stick for less.

It's insane how much data a SD card can hold, or heck a micro SD. I have a couple 8GB micro SDs, and to think that they go much higher. Data density now days just blows my mind. I remember the first hard drive I ever bought with my own money was 40GB and that was considered a lot. Now they make micro SD cards that hold more than that. Even 40GB was impressive at the time, as go back 10-20 years and hard drives held MB worth of data at most.

Two years ago, ram price was at the bottom. I got my two 4 gigs ram sticks for just 40 bucks I recalled.

It will continue to rise until next half of the year at very least.

Ram is also scarse it seems. I just ordered todat a DDR4 2x4GB @3200MHz ballistix set and i have to wait 20 workdays before the shop has them in stock again.
Apparently, ballistix memory is very popular.

Probably more to do with the Christmas season than anything else.
And I dont mean RAM sales, I mean new system sales, which are still pretty strong each year around the holidays. Dell and all the rest of them buy gobs of RAM every year.

The cloud industry probably buys quite a lot of ram too I imagine. And they are always increasing and adding more servers. That's probably the biggest consumer of ram right now.

I expected that as well. I was also assuming that the shop which is alternate.nl would have made sure they have enough in stock for Christmas because of the increased sales this time of the year.
But it is obvious that since ram is scarce, that the prices went up and available stock is decreased.
Flaw in reasoning on my side. :(
I was hoping to put my system together during my holiday.
Now it will probably be the third week of januari. :(

Back in 1995, Microsoft introduced Windows 95. I went with a friend to a computer outlet and paid $299 for a ONE GIGABYTE hard drive because I wanted enough room for this new OS and all my DOS games like Doom and Castle Wolfenstein and all the basic programs I had written in the BASIC programming language.

If I can recall, I remember back in 1995 a Mac computer having a 500 MB drive. Unreal!

How the hell can have shortage on something that is being produced faster than the increase of people using it?. It's impossible that if you produce 50000 modules a day or 20m a year, every year 20m people more is using them. The population of the world does not increase exponentially, it's nonsense. If people is so stupid that they buy 2 modules, then the next year buy 2 modules more and so on, just for the sake of increasing a little the speed...then we are the problem, not those companies.

I suggest everyone to buy the ram and to stick with that ram for 3-4 years, regardless of getting old, JUST KEEP THE F***ING RAM AND STOP BUYING MORE :(

Not sure about two years ago. I do remember the HP 1GB DDR2 sticks for negative money (yes, paid to take after rebate) about 10 years (or less) ago. I had so damn much DDR2 sitting in my closet that I didn't know what to do with all the stuff.

I was shocked to see prices recently because I hadn't built anything in over 2.5 years.

As for old timers, my 256KB kit to go from 384KB to 640KB in my Tandy 1000SX was over $200. At the same time, the 20MEG MFM drive with Interleave of 4 to 1 (4 spins to read 1 track) hard drive cost $379.

Just sucks cause mix matching doesn't give optimal performance.
