Ram price falling?!

Is it just me or do you guys notice the prices of ram coming down...I havn't checked in a long time so i might be behind but i remember last year 256 ddr was like 100 smt...it's like $55 now for pc2100.

It's just you...to get "top of the line" memory now costs about the same as top of the line a year ago...that said, RAM prices follow the same principles as the prices of all commodities...

definitely, I'm returning my kingmax ram that can' even run at its ddr333 spec and paying only 10 more dollars (because i lost 19 on a 15% restocking fee) to get crucial ram from newegg

And i remember buying 32 megabytes of 66mhz ram for my dads HP petium233 back in 1998 for 80 dollars....

Oh yeah its cheap!

🙁 magomago, if the RAM wouldn't run at its rated speed then that classes as either mis-representation of faulty goods, both of which should cost you nothing (no restocking fee), in fact not even postage costs. That's how it is in the UK, you can even get the Credit Card company to reimburse you and take action against the company, isn't that similar outside the UK?

😉 Anyway, RAM rpices went up back in July-ish, SDR and DDR were the same price back then. It has been decreasing steadily for a few months now (heights were Sept-ish IIRC) and is expected to continue decreasing at least until March-ish. DDR is still a fair bit more expensive than SDR, at least PC2700 has come down to PC2100 pricing now.

Oh yea... it's dropped like a rock recently. OTQ, but does anyone remember the old days when 72 pin SIMMS were selling for $40-$45 a meg? When the bottom dropped several years ago I bought 16 megs for just under $300 and it felt like I was stealing it.

All DDR has dropped dramatically in the past few weeks, PC2100 especially, and is expected to slip more. Standard SDRAM is on the rise though, and will continue to rise as well.

SuperSix, when do you expect PC2100 ram prices to hit rock bottom?
i'm planning to get a 512MB stick

TIA🙂

They should hit rock bottom in a month's time. Barton is out and Kt400A is out. The market would shift their entire attention to DDR333 and DDR400. Intel is making plans for a 800Mhz quad pumped bus so PC2100 chips should be pretty much worthless then.

Well it is bad considering samsung ddr400 only hits ddr400 at relaxed timings, and about zilch after that. I know what you mean though 😛

I fail to see any logic in this post. New CPU/chipset introductions have nothing to do with memory market prices. "The Market" - What market? Gamers? Overclockers? That is a VERY small segment of the industry, and doesn't dictate prices. Prices are dictated by module availability/demand, demand being created by large system houses, Dell, HP/Compaq/etc., not the relatively small enthusiast's market.

PC2100 worthless? PC100 SDRAM is still readily available and selling briskly, don't forget the huge installed base of PC's that continually need memory upgrades.

I really have no idea.. If you're hardcore you can subscribe to some of the Asisan trade mags, and see where module pricing is..

If I knew, I would be rich! 😀

Agreed. I got a chuckle when I read that as well.

😉 Could there be any more quotes? (Chandler impression BTW)

in a nutshell, in october of 2001 i bought 2x256 MB of DDR2100 from crucial for $32 with free shipping, thats like 65 total, and not a 256 chip costs like 50. its on its way back down, but over a year ago, it was at rock bottom IMO

Stuff's about 10% cheaper now than it was at around April 2002, that's for sure. Definately come down since a few months ago.

LoL, yah I commented about that in another thread. I was mad I didn't get 3 sticks!!! It was ~$80 a few weeks later.
