In this day and age of cheap memory I really don't stress out too much about a program using a few hundred MB of RAM. If FF is using more than a few hundred MB, though, something is probably wrong. Memory leaks aren't very common and I think Mozilla devs plugged a bunch of them with the FF 3.0 release, but they still exist. I think I've only encountered one memory leak and it was with FF 2.x, so far no issues with 3.x. And don't forget that a lot of times plugins can cause memory leaks, so rule those out first.
Maybe it helps that I actually shut down Firefox when I'm done browsing, though, never understood why people leave their browser open for days on end.
