RAM Leaks

In this day and age of cheap memory I really don't stress out too much about a program using a few hundred MB of RAM. If FF is using more than a few hundred MB, though, something is probably wrong. Memory leaks aren't very common and I think Mozilla devs plugged a bunch of them with the FF 3.0 release, but they still exist. I think I've only encountered one memory leak and it was with FF 2.x, so far no issues with 3.x. And don't forget that a lot of times plugins can cause memory leaks, so rule those out first.

Maybe it helps that I actually shut down Firefox when I'm done browsing, though, never understood why people leave their browser open for days on end. 😛

its not that i use a ton of tabs all at once. sometimes clutter builds up if you leave your pc/browser open for days/weeks at a time. having a lot of ram makes it not something to worry about. its not like the olden days where you closed programs all the time to conserve ram.

Yeah but how do you navigate through so many tabs to find the one you want quickly?

tabsmixplus? theres a drop down list of all the tabs that scrolls on the right side of the tab bar. without that yea it wouldn't work. i've loaded chrome up with a buncha tabs and it becomes useless.

Yeah I think some people got it up to 1 to 1.1 GB + before. By the time that happens you have to close it and restart firefox. Unless of course you don't mind it getting slower and slower.

I had a bad one yesterday originating from bcmwltry.exe (virtual memory low, etc). You'd think that a major company like Broadcom would do some basic testing of their apps before releasing them to the public...

It was using up 2.3GB of RAM and growing.

this is a memory leak, OP's is not.

btw it's not a RAM leak, the leak could be eating up swap too, when are you gonna call it then, a RAM/SWAP leak?

That's cuz you're using all these crappy pieces of software.

Use a Dell Optiplex with Windows XP Professional SP3, IE 8, Symantec Antivirus and Symantec Ghost and your problems will likely go away. Otherwise get a Mac.

Cooliris eats ram for breakfast. Once you start it up and close it down it never lets the ram use go down much. I seen it use well over 600 MB +

😕 You don't want to get a Mac if you're concerned about your computer eating too much memory. Especially for web browsing. Safari is probably the biggest RAM hog I've ever seen. Even with tons of RAM and a fast CPU, it'll beachball (temporarily freeze) all the time.

Changing Firefox's disk cache allotment from the default 50MB, to 500MB makes FF use much more RAM.
