Rage requires 3 discs for 360, 8gig install for PS3

Rage will span three discs on Xbox 360 and require an 8GB install on PS3, id Software creative director Tim Willits has confirmed. It was rumored that Rage would have a large install and multiple discs on 360, but it seemed as if id was leaning toward a slim-and-trim two-disc set, stating that a separate multiplayer disc-swap would be "fail." id didn't have to pick a disc number for the PS3 version of Rage, effectively utilizing the Blu-ray drive to hold all of the game's 8 gigs, something that Willits seemed very pleased about:

"Sony was great," Willits said. "Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don't allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off. What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it's just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it's all the same. Some of the other systems you have... should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it's very nice."

For 360 versions, Willits said id recommends installing the game to the hard drive, or if you don't have the space for all 22GB, after installing and finishing the first half of the game from disc one, uninstall it, and then install disc two. There isn't a reason to disc-swap after completing the first half, and "you don't really need to install the multiplayer disc if you're really tight on hard disk space," Willits said.

glad im getting this on the PC

my xbox only has a 20 gig HDD

Not downloading it off Steam I hope. D:

I wonder if this is going to be just another generic shooter like their previous games. ID hasn't done anything truly new in years. It it does end up being another Doom 3, I'll pass.

This is a game I'll definitely wait for many reviews to come out before making a decision.

Supposedly id is considering releasing uncompressed texture pack for the PC version that will weigh in at 75GB.

Yeah, I'm waiting for feedback before I even consider it.

+1 Game looks and sounds good, but ill wait till some initial reviews to make sure its just not more hype then actual substance. 22GB install for 360!?!?! Sheesh! My PC arrives in a few weeks, maybe ill just buy that version instead of the 360.

I didn't mind the PS3 having a blu ray player with added disc space when it came out. A 360 with a hdd was $400 and a PS3 was $600, I figured it was an extra feature for people with extra cash. These days though a 360 with a hdd is $300 and a PS3 is $250 and now this disc swapping is getting to be a pain in the ass. It's not like with FF7 when you had three discs you only needed to swap once each either, on Mass Effect 2 I was swapping discs CONSTANTLY as I went from one planet to the next. So annoying.

The sad thing is even after installing both discs to the Xbox's hard drive, it STILL insisted on constant swapping. At least when installing the game on the PC you only have to keep disc 1 in the drive after loading both discs of data onto the harddrive.

Really? I installed ME2 to my HD and don't ever remember having to do that

Me either. At a specific spot in the story you swap discs and shouldn't have to bother again. I'm not sure what backasswords way you have to play to get this "constant disc swapping" but its certainly odd.

Depends on your ISP. With many going to tiers it could wipe out a lot of your bandwidth for the month with the size of it.

yea i have none of those ISP issues. pulled the witcher 2 off amazon on Saturday, 16.4 gigs, only took about 4 hours to DL

my ISP is one of the few left with no caps

You didn't. You switched it once to disc two to do a lot of the story, and then back to disc 1 to finish the story. The guy was just trying to make it seem like more of a problem then it was.

HDs are standard and cheap to upgrade on the PS3 so no biggy. I feel bad for all those 4GB 360 owners, Ms was really short sighted by using DVDs.

I'm sure that install will take a couple hours to do on the slow PS3.

Because a 22GB install will be quick on the 360?

Because upgrading the XBOX hard drive is that much harder? You either just buy the official one, or save money by buying an appropriate WD laptop drive, easily flashing the Xbox firmware on it, and stick it in there. Cost me like $40 to turn my 4gb Xbox slim into a 250gb unit.

Putting all this install BS aside, I just want to know which system will have the best version of the game. If all are equal, then I will just pick it up for the 360 and do the install and play it a hour or so later.

Seeing how the game installs are way faster on the xbox than they are on the playstation, I would bet the 22gb install of all three discs would be done before the 8 gb on the playstation. Hell, Resistance took almost 20 minutes to install and update on the playstation on day one.

lol. This. Installing RE5 was slow enough that I had time to take a bath and it was still installing when I came back.

Ms was really short sighted by using DVDs
DVDs shouldn't be a problem if the bulk of the data can be put on the HD. Then it would be similar to a PC where you just need the disc in the system for the sake of copy protection. At that point it could be a regular CD and it would be the same speed.

I'm turned off a bit purely because of Willets's characterization of the two platforms. He does realize that there are multiple PS3's with various HDD sizes, right? I've only got a 40gb HDD in my PS3 and a 120gb drive on my 360. Both platforms offer one specific optical drive (DVD, Blu-ray) and various HDD sizes.

Just comes across as asinine. And after Doom3, I could give 2-shits about what Id thinks of the gaming environment.
