Back to the OP. It's a guilty self-punishment/pleasure of mine to even read or engage in P&N, because almost everyone here is intellectually dishonest, bigotted, hypocritical, and unwilling for compromise. So despite the fact that I try my best to engage in a civil debate, it's a lost cause to seek changes in opinion OR a concession. You can corner someone all day, but they'll simply move on to the next thread spouting off the same nonsensical idiocy.

Ars's Soapbox is slightly better than here. At least the idiot you cornered might have 1% chance of reform. Though, usually they come back 3-5 threads later unreformed.

I'd say that it's more accurate to say that the current environment in this country makes it easier for a dishonest media to change emotions of uncertainty and fear into raw anger through the use of lies and outright distortion.

Reading a thread on Howard Zinn, I am getting more and more disturbed about the rage and hate expressed in this forum.

Are people legitimately thinking about the issues, or are the AnandTech forums more of a punching bag for people to work out their personal issues?

On the flip side, maybe it is good that we know where people in America stand. I think people write things here that they would not say in public.

Calling out or disliking Obama, even personally, isn't racism, no matter how much you like him. Racism is the belief that one race is inherently superior or inferior to another. Insisting that Obama not be subject to the same sort of criticisms as are other politicians comes perilously close to racism, implying that he is "special" and cannot stand up to the same treatment as can white politicians.

As for the other, my real name is on my profile; this is true for every political forum I frequent. So I am by definition saying the same things I say in public - although I admit I'm much nicer to idiots in public. Usually. But then idiots tend to know they are idiots and don't try to pretend otherwise in real life.

On the flip side, maybe it is good that we know where people in America stand. I think people write things here that they would not say in public.

I've been reading P&N for several years. And I am not shy about using harsh/borderline abusive language if people post lies. I remember there was a thread on Gay Marriage where things got pretty bad.

But I draw the line on attacking people based on their race, level of education, geographic location, & other things that are not relevant to the arguments at hand.

It seems like since around 2008, nothing is off limits anymore.

I'm not even sure it's about issues sometimes. A lot of the times it seems like personal destruction is the goal. And I have to wonder if the people who run this website want AnandTech to be known for this kind of behavior. This is not something that goes unnoticed in the web community.

We need to have something to attack them on besides the merits of their arguments. You need to get into the P&N spririt.......

The Rage in this forum is because there are quite a few people everywhere that get very upset when they have what they hold dear questioned by others. Most people respond badly to criticism and it's worse on the internet when people are relatively anonymous so they can bash to their hearts content on each other. Also, I have a feeling that some people are possible "plants" that are posting here for an Agenda. Not as if that hasn't happened before *cough*Rollo from the video forums*cough*.

Personally, some people I don't even bother to usually post against as it's pointless. I try to keep track of who are the nuts on both sides of the party views or just nuts in general and try not to feed the trolls. There is a difference though with discussing with someone who you disagree with over an issue and both sides can come up with intelligent arguments, and having a discussion boil down to pointless name calling on either other posters or politicians or the subject matter.

If you want my list here it is of people I typically wouldn't give the time of day to. Spidery07, JohnOfSheffield, Craig234, Vic, Fear No Evil, Hadcp, AzN, Patranus, TheFlyingPig, and Specop 007.

Here are some I typically disagree with on various issues, although I may not post on every issues, but at least they try in my view to be reasonable, rational, and mostly cordial about stuff. Werepossum, woolfe9999, JEDIYoda, Hayabusa, Zebo, Robor, JPeyton, Palehorse, and quite a few others.

As I said, I don't always agree with them, most of the time I do not, but they are usually reasonable in their views and arguments.

The other thing to mention is that there are some posters here who just jollies playing devil's advocate because they like pushing other people's buttons to rile them up. When you see this, it's just best to move on because nothing you say will matter to them.

My two guiding principles, which I try to stick to are, the Golden Rule and Sometimes if you don't have something nice to say keep your trap shut.

I put the number at about a dozen who I feel I could have an intelligent discussion with. Few of those are likely to change their views, but they will at least acknowledge a fact when it's presented, most of the time, and will occasionally make a concession to the other side of the argument. That's among the regular posters. There are a few less regular ones who can occasionally be reasonable.

I have changed my view on topics as a result of other people's posts probably 20 or so times in about 10 or so years I have posted regularly on political chat forums. Come to think of it, that isn't really very often at all, and I'm probably more flexible than most.

I do believe the true nature of the nation IS in fact widely racist (to different degrees of course), distrustful (from the government, big oil, big banking, etc) and disdainful for the less fortunate (simply a part of being a capitalistic society).

There is nothing surprising to me though, I mean EVERYTHING in the US of A has been historically about competition. Our laws are inherently adversarial, it's You Vs Me (or rather, your Lawyer vs My Lawyer), our economy is based on cutthroat competition, our education is designed hugely to advance our nation's GDP, as much as our own cultural and intellectual welfare.

You can't really expect the other aspects of life to be not colored in the same vein.

If you were to judge a nation based on how far we have come as humanity goes, the USA is probably the worst example you can give.

You guys on the left don't care for the "little guys" as you so often like to say. I just filed federal taxes and I got taxed over 200 bucks from 1000 I dared make on the side. And, I only made around 9k total last year.

Plus, from everything I'm hearing, you want to raise taxes even more.
