Is it possible that, because of the acute crisis facing this country, people are kind of scared and feel more strongly and more intensely about issues and their views?

Reading a thread on Howard Zinn, I am getting more and more disturbed about the rage and hate expressed in this forum.
Are people legitimately thinking about the issues, or are the AnandTech forums more of a punching bag for people to work out their personal issues?
On the flip side, maybe it is good that we know where people in America stand. I think people write things here that they would not say in public.
For example, this was written in a recent thread:
Perhaps here in P&N, the true nature of where we stand as a nation is revealed: widespread racism, distrust & open hatred of fellow citizens, disdain for the less fortunate.
Is this the kind of nation we want? The kind of legacy we want to pass to the next generation?

You know what I think? I think people who inject personal insults into each of their posts is just a pathetic loser. They seriously piss me off. I bet they weren't held enough as a child, and that their mothers had small boobs. What a bunch of stupid pathetic assholes.
Oh, and another thing. They're totally not self-aware.

No.
Watch the news come tuesday.
Suicide might be a valid solution for your meager brain, but if not, at least never reproduce you stupid fuck.
Well theres 2 types.
1) Wants to take money from the working class to share it with everyone
2) Wants to keep what they have worked for
Obviously these 2 types will never get along. Its just getting more heated lately because group 1 wants to take more and more.
Did I miss the amazing awesomeness that was supposed to be revealed on Tuesday?
ROFL! typical right wing brilliance, generalize the world into two buckets
good hard working americans and nogood welfare class commies
You can't really believe that 3rd grade logic?
If you really must look at things in such a simplistic manner, at least you could title the groups correctly. Rich vs. poor or Wealthy vs. not wealthy would be more accurate.
And I'll give you a clue, your working class is in the not wealthy group, and the wealthy class is who's taking their hard earned dollars and they most certainly aren't sharing with everyone.
As long as we are making stupid bi polar categorization heres one for ya. You can break down the right wingers that claim to support the working class into to groups
1. Rich people lying their ass off for political gain, that could care less about the working class
2. Stupid blind sheeple that believe the Wolf in sheeps clothing is their savior
Wow, you could say the exact same thing about left wingers..unless you believe left wingers can't be rich.
And before you say that the left care about the working class, why has the war on poverty been going on for 30+ years? (I know, that is the lower class but close enough in this economy). Maybe that is a war that we should withdraw from.
Jocko, meet some facts. Some facts, meet Jocko.
The 'war on poverty' was fought briefly by Democrats in the 60's. We were winning - the percent of Americans under the poverty line was cut by a third.
Some changes were made that lasted - and the reduced rate of poverty has continued pretty flat (a bit up under Republicans, a bit down under Democrats) every since.
The war has been for the rich since reagan.
I've been reading P&N for several years. And I am not shy about using harsh/borderline abusive language if people post lies. I remember there was a thread on Gay Marriage where things got pretty bad.
But I draw the line on attacking people based on their race, level of education, geographic location, & other things that are not relevant to the arguments at hand.
It seems like since around 2008, nothing is off limits anymore.
I'm not even sure it's about issues sometimes. A lot of the times it seems like personal destruction is the goal. And I have to wonder if the people who run this website want AnandTech to be known for this kind of behavior. This is not something that goes unnoticed in the web community.
Awesome, the thread is already derailed to a issue fest.
Back to the OP. It's a guilty self-punishment/pleasure of mine to even read or engage in P&N, because almost everyone here is intellectually dishonest, bigotted, hypocritical, and unwilling for compromise. So despite the fact that I try my best to engage in a civil debate, it's a lost cause to seek changes in opinion OR a concession. You can corner someone all day, but they'll simply move on to the next thread spouting off the same nonsensical idiocy.
Ars's Soapbox is slightly better than here. At least the idiot you cornered might have 1% chance of reform. Though, usually they come back 3-5 threads later unreformed.
Not as if that hasn't happened before *cough*Rollo from the video forums*cough*.
This sorta.
The Rage in this forum is because there are quite a few people everywhere that get very upset when they have what they hold dear questioned by others. Most people respond badly to criticism and it's worse on the internet when people are relatively anonymous so they can bash to their hearts content on each other. Also, I have a feeling that some people are possible "plants" that are posting here for an Agenda. Not as if that hasn't happened before *cough*Rollo from the video forums*cough*.
Personally, some people I don't even bother to usually post against as it's pointless. I try to keep track of who are the nuts on both sides of the party views or just nuts in general and try not to feed the trolls. There is a difference though with discussing with someone who you disagree with over an issue and both sides can come up with intelligent arguments, and having a discussion boil down to pointless name calling on either other posters or politicians or the subject matter.
If you want my list here it is of people I typically wouldn't give the time of day to. Spidery07, JohnOfSheffield, Craig234, Vic, Fear No Evil, Hadcp, AzN, Patranus, TheFlyingPig, and Specop 007.
Here are some I typically disagree with on various issues, although I may not post on every issues, but at least they try in my view to be reasonable, rational, and mostly cordial about stuff. Werepossum, woolfe9999, JEDIYoda, Hayabusa, Zebo, Robor, JPeyton, Palehorse, and quite a few others.
As I said, I don't always agree with them, most of the time I do not, but they are usually reasonable in their views and arguments.
The other thing to mention is that there are some posters here who just jollies playing devil's advocate because they like pushing other people's buttons to rile them up. When you see this, it's just best to move on because nothing you say will matter to them.
My two guiding principles, which I try to stick to are, the Golden Rule and Sometimes if you don't have something nice to say keep your trap shut.

What you profess to believe and what you say that you want done are two so different things.
You believe in hatred and revenge, you believe that you are correct to judge and condemn, even though you NEVER read anything beyond a headline and are proven a bloody fool in pretty much every thread because of it, which you ignore so you can keep your holier than though attitude going while quite possibly being the most pathetic man to ever visit these forums.
That you lie about your standpoint TWICE by saying that you didn't really mean what you said, something that is somewhat of your trademark to say, is just even more pathetic.
