Radeon R9 290x QUADFIRE (Hell yeah)

KaRLiTOS I applaud your patience. I would have changed video cards by now.

I prefer to upgrade my monitors then doing a sidegrade (downgrade) with some 384 bit bus cards. Nvidia doesn't scale pretty well past 2 cards.

I might get a 34UM95 From LG (3440x1440) and maybe sell one card but I really love my cards and they OC pretty well. They also stay pretty damn cool with EK blocks and backplates. I might keep the four :awe: .

Keep all 4 since you already have all the watercooling set up. Get that LG 34UM95 and have a blast. You deserve it!

So, now what I did to test.

First, I formated my hard drive to be sure that there is no left overs. First thing I tried is Run my Quad Fire setup on a single DVI monitors

-QuadFire 290x + Single DVI Monitors = PASSED

Then I tried QuadFire 290x on a Single DP adapter monitor

-QuadFire 290x + Single DP adapter monitor = FAILED

So in conslusion of those tests
-every cards are working fine
-motherboard is working fine
-every PCIe slots are fine
-No power issues (also tested each wires of my PSU to verify the stable voltages)
-DVI outputs are fine

So I proceeded to test each single cards individually with the DP adapter monitor

-First Card + DP adapter/monitor = PASSED
-Second Card + DP adapter/monitor = PASSED
-Third card + DP adapter/monitor = PASSED
-Fourth card + DP adapter/monitor = PASSED

So in conclusion to those tests:
-Every cards display port outputs are working just fine
-Every adapters are working fine (the three of them)
-every monitors are working just fine

Then, my next steps were to try every combinations of CrossFire with the DP
I tried :

-Card 1 and 2 (crossfire) + DP = FAILED
-Card 1 and 3 (crossfire) + DP = FAILED
-Card 1 and 4 (crossfire) + DP = FAILED
-Card 2 and 3 (crossfire) + DP = FAILED
-Card 2 and 4 (crossfire) + DP = FAILED
-Card 3 and 4 (crossfire) + DP = FAILED

Between each of these tests, I was reinstalling Windows 8.1 to be sure that there is no crap and was trying different drivers from 13.11 beta 6 to 14.3 beta 1. And sometime trying more than one drivers on a single combination.

Then, my last test, which is one of the most conclusive was to test QuadFire 290x with eyefinity but with the DP monitor unplugged and only the DVIs outputs. So the resolution was 5220x1440 (eyefinity with two 1440p monitors)

QuadFire 290x + Eyefinity Dual 1440p monitors = PASSED

Metro Last Light Benchmark 5220x1440

So my conclusion is the same as 3 months ago

CrossFire (or tri or Quad) doesn't work with the display port outputs

My only way to be 100% sure of that is get some GTX 780ti SLI to test but keep in mind that the same system (exactly the same system) same monitors and same adapters were used with
-Trifire HD 6970
-QuadFire 7970

With no issue

I have been running tri fire 290s and I have been using do port. I am not using adapter though cause my monitor, crossover 3020mdp, has a native do connection. I don't have eyefinity setup but I tried to use the dvi ports and hdmi port to connect my old 1050p and 1024p as side monitors. never had a problem.

I've use 13.12, 14.1 to 14.3 drivers. could it be because of eyefinity set up?

In that case, dump the setup and move on. Maybe 780ti's will do the trick.

he already said no to green cards.

My seller for the 34UM95 gave me the slip and started delying the order... last time he gave me the "what?" response of no time frame for shipping... went to paypal and took my money back from.

Went over to ebay and ordered one of the new Samsung 4k 28in TN screens (Reviews are going mad over it). Gonna keep another 2k next to it.

He still has to move on. The engineer AMD recognized the problem and has no solution. It is not going to work for now. It is time to stop banging his head against a wall and make hardware changes. Heck, just go back to 7970's if brand loyalty is a problem. 🙄 (hopefully this is a BF4 thing).

Brand is not a problem. It's not BF4, it's in all 3d applications.

Well, like I mentioned before, and other posters incorrectly answered for you, it may be time to switch cards. If AMD already replied confirming the issue without a fix, I'd stop banging my head against a wall and get a card that does work for your setup. This does not sound like fun.

Quite the opposite. Its what PC is all about. Tweaking, tuning, breaking, fixing....
If you don't like it, consoles may interest you more.
I enjoy tweaking as much as the next guy, but not being able to use your video cards with your monitors is quite another.

Sorry I havent read the entire thread (on lunch at work) but has anybody suggested a newer video card bios? What brand are these and are they the reference design?

TPU has a nice collection of user uploaded GPU bioses you could try. What version(s) do your cards have?

OP has already had a number of people recommend getting new video cards. He is intelligent enough to not have to be reminded of his options over and over again.

Tried several already.

I don't think the issue is hardware or firmware... it must be a software issue (driver) .

I thought of something this week that I haven't tried.

It was doing a UEFI Windows 8.1 Installation... but it didn't work 🙁

I will have more updates today since AMD asked me to try some registry key.

ok made my tests and I put them on a video for easier understanding.

The registry key that AMD sent me is
Code:
"PP_PhmUseDummyBackend" as DWORD, value of ‘1’

Need to put that key in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000 (0001 , 0002 , 0003)
0000 - First card
0001 - Second card
0002 - Third card
0003 - Fourth card

But I first tried to use those registry key with the first two cards and then after I tried on the third and fourth one too.

I noticed that this command keeps the cards on idle with 2d clocks ( 300mhz / 150mhz ) and idle voltage (0.930v)

Timestamps

00:00:01 - Did first test normally with QuadFire on
00:00:52 - Monitors get out of sync
00:01:00 - I'm showing that the cards are still under load because you still hear the Quad Coil Whine
00:01:15 - I'm showing the load of the GPUs with numbers (aida64 LCD monitor)
00:01:40 - I'm entering the "PP_PhmUseDummyBackend" registry key for the first two cards.
00:03:00 - The system is restarted and I'm setting the Benchmark to test
00:04:45 - Test is starting with the command in the first two cards. I then show that the first two cards are on idle with idle clocks
00:05:30 - Entering the command for the other two cards (3 and 4)
00:05:50 - Restarting PC and give a quick check on my boy playing . 😛
00:07:10 - Testing the cards with command lines for the 4 cards and checking the clocks and voltages and the load percentage.

The Benchmark is still running after 120 minutes with voltages on the four cards at 0.93v and the clocks at 300mhz / 150 mhz.
