Sweet, I love it when new high-end cards come out. I'm looking to upgrade to a new midrange card (4870 or GTX260) in the next few months, and these releases always help prices drop.

I wonder why the x2 part in the name.. I'd say 4930, 4950, 4970 and 4995 would be the best choices I was never a fan of the x2 suffix.

As for performance, let the competition begin! Again Ohh I can see all the flame wars, harsh discussions and bans incoming

They went with the 95 at the end to match the naming of the GTX295 or at least that's what I got from the article.

I actually think ATI is smart for doing this. A buddy of mine was looking into a an SLI setup recently and he had not even considered a GTX 295 until I suggested it. He didn't know it was dual card. I think it would be much easier for the average consumer to figure out that a 4870X2 is a pair of 4870s than a GTX 295 is a pair of GTX 260s (or thereabouts).

what i like is the part about running out of numbers.

5 years ago the 9800 was a golden card - for ATI and gamers and people who did CAD work.

today, the 9800 rides again - as a re-named nVidia 8800GT.

i almost got the 8800GT but they re-named it and i couldn't figure out which was which,
to correlate the 8800GT that got such high marks, with the 9800 model numbers. i wanted
a card that had been out at least a year to avoid driver problems. ended up getting the
ATI 3870.

I guess it would make more sense to have it be HD 4970x2? But then again it's less confusing than 8800gt --> 9800gt --> GTS series.

And why did they make the 8800gs 9600gso? I can understand 9600gs. But why GSO?
