Radeon 9700 Pro: Image is "off center" at high resolutions...

If I put any of my games, whether the API is OpenGL or DirectX, at a high resolution such as 1600x1200, they both go "off the screen". Picture an image of a game, then crop off the right side and the bottom about an inch each, that's my problem. My monitor supports resolutions up to and including 1600x1200. I have the latest drivers for both the CRT monitor and the Radeon 9700 Pro. Strangely it will only do this in a game and not in Windows.

Any help is very much appreciated.

did you try recentering it at a high resolution? is it then centered in windows?

It goes off the screen and it's like my Radeon doesn't render it. I can't move it to the right and see because it's not rendered. It's all clipped off so to speak. Hard to explain.

All you have to do is adjust the display with monitor's controls and it'll be permanently fixed.

Every monitor stores its geometry against every resolution and refresh rate it supports. If you fix it once, it'll stay fixed whenever it enters that same mode.

Ah, the good old 2000/XP refresh rate glitch strikes again!

BFG's advice will work, however if you find yourself having eye trouble because of the 3D mode refresh rate (it usually kicks back to 60 Hz), look for a utility such as RefreshLock to force the games to run at your optimal refresh rate.

Guys, I think you're missing his problem.

The image is not off the edge of the PHYSICAL MONITOR, it's off the edge of the DRAWN AREA.

His image is being RENDERED off-center, and as such, the part of the image is cut off at the black edge of the picture. The image is centered on the monitor.

Looks like they're correct to me. Classic symtoms of the monitor not properly setup for the refresh/resolution the game is using.

I'd like to point you to this quote: "It goes off the screen and it's like my Radeon doesn't render it. I can't move it to the right and see because it's not rendered. It's all clipped off so to speak. Hard to explain."

This is what the problem seems to be to me:

----------------- <- right side of monitor or bottom of monitor (not drawn on proper angle)
**************
************** <- Black screen, not drawn on
**************
8888888888
8888888888 <- Edge of game, but cut off
8888888888

The game does not go off the monitor, but is cut off; the edge of the screen simply ends in black, as if a strip is not being rendered at all.

Is this what you mean idnut?

I thought this was a pretty well documented occurence with the R300 chips? i have heard this happen more than once.

Yes, he's right. Did a better job explaining it than me though. What do I do?! I'm with 1152x864 in QIII and can't go any higher. 1024x768 also clips off the right side of the screen. :(

In your ATI Control Panel, click on your DISPLAYS tab and then click the button for your monitor. Is the maximum resolution set as high as your monitor will support? If it's only set at 800x600, for example, games will not properly display resolutions above 800x600.

Well, if I set the ATI Control Panel at 1600x1200, everything is clipped off in Windows too! Before I installed the newer Catalyst drivers I could at least view my desktop in a large resolution but now now.

Nothing said has worked. I am running a program called RefreshLock with all the resolutions locked at a Hz above 65 to assure Windows won't do its infamous evil. I don't believe the refresh rate is the problem but something very strange. I have yet to find anything of this problem on ATI's site or anywhere on the internet. What do I do?

Tried going to displays in advanced display properties. Has the option to reposition the screen. Any screenshots?

I can't get any screenies for you but it's exactly how I describe it. I've looked around in the Advanced section but nothing relative. :(

Sorry for the clueless previous response. One more idea - try using the driver for "Plug and Play Monitor" rather than the specific one for your monitor. Sometimes the specific drivers are just plain wrong re: the monitor's properties. The one for mine is anyway, I can tell you that much. :)

I see the screen is stopped before the end but its maximized. I noticed you had two rigs. Tried with the other monitor?

That other computer is being loaned to my grandparents at the moment but I doubt there would be any difference. :( I'm going to reformat now and start fresh with the Catalyst 3.2's, I also doubt it will fix the problem.

Can you go to your grandparents and try the card in their computer? If nothing is wrong there then your monitor is screwed up.

No AGP :(. You really think it's my monitor? When I put my desktop at 1600x1200 it will max everything tiny as hell and my start menu isn't visible but if I pull my mouse down to the bottom of the screen, Windows will render it. Same goes for left, right and up. It's strange but it doesn't do this in games, obviously.

Either monitor or video card. I would find somewhere that could check your video card. Have them try the 1600x1200

Try getting sending the graphic card back to the manufacture or email/phoning for support?

Good luck man.
