Actually, reading the original link and the question he is answering - it has more to do with why the Verde and Pitcairm are clocked so high versus Taihiti.

It says nothing about drivers. This just supports why Taihiti was clocked so low versus it's younger siblings. The process matured.

EDIT: I think people are assuming in the reviews, instead of re-benching the Taihiti card, they just took their results from the previous review (which was only a few weeks ago) even though there was a driver revision in between?

tahiti and it's younger siblings, do have changes.... not just less shaders, TMUs and etc.....one of them was the better cache system, 4-3-3 instead of 4-4-2

Well aware of that, didn't even claim they were 1:1 with skimping. I was addressing that your reference doesn't mention the driver discrepancy that was raised.

I can't wait until the 7850 is released on newegg/amazon. I can finally get a CF setup. :)

What about the huge gap between 7770 and 7850? It blows my mind.. that AMD is ignoring the $200 price point.

AMD will have that card ~200 shortly don't worry. Both these companies know $199 is sweet spot for most ppl and most cards are purchased around there.

I'm strongly thinking of replacing my 6970 with the 7870 now, purely on thermal performance.

My current card is dumping too much heat into my case, i.e. lots of additional cooling required and still not 100% stable due to heat spots somewhere. It's affecting my enjoyment of games because, whenever I game (or play video), I'm always anxious about random crashes. I miss my HD5850 days where I could simply live with 1 exhaust fan (vs the current 3 and stability issue).

Looking forward to these.

Thats the advantage of blower hsf, all that hot air goes out the case. It's a toss up, noise vs cool case ambients.

I thought most coolers nowadays are of the type that dumps heat into the case? Happy for you to clarify.

That said, generating less heat in the first place is a good first step to me. :)

I have to leave my case open to avoid overheating now that i put in a HD7970 that dumps heat into my base.. but meh its not too bad a problem!

I have to do the same with the 6970 (an MSI TwinFrozr card that's factory overclocked) and add 2-3 fans for cooling. This is ridiculous considering I managed just fine with one exhaust fan and without keeping the case open with the HD5850.

Oem case or no central ac?

I got a antec 300,which isn't the worlds greatest case, one fan up front, one fan on top and one in the rear, all going medium rpms and even with 1.86v on my 7970 pushing 1200/1600,i rarely ever see load temps above 75cel at 50% fanspeed.

Reference msi btw.

Isn't the reference card a blower?

Yup,fan at the rear of the card.

We are talking about CARD that dont blow air out but have fans that blow onto the heatsink and the heat stays in your case!...

My pc ran cool with the HD6850 exhaust blower fan system but this HD7970 dumps all the heat inside and so i can either go out and buy 3 x 140mm fans for my case now 2 top and 1 side or i can just leave the side pannel open. either option will let the heat out. but the fan one i think will add more noise.

Yup,i know i don't really care much for the noise this gives off but coming from a gtx560 non ti that dumped heat in my case,i went for something that pushed it out, about 55% fanspeed which is what i use now,i find gaming with headphones much more enjoyable.

Stock voltage i can stay at 40% but it almost seems my card has 2 modes, stock and 40% or 55% when i overclock it,i try and stay under 75cel at all times and going from even 45% to 55% is a huge difference in noise, its unbearable at 55%.

I'm in the market for a card that cost <$300...hope Nvidia price the 660Ti around there...
else the best I can get will be a 7850 OC...

The advantage of the large coolers which dump heat in your case are that the fans are often not noisy. But if you have to add extra fans to push heat out your case, you just added extra costs and noise.

Better just to get a blower type. :)

Lousy price, not impressed

GTX580 speeds for a 100 dollars less than what the GTX580 cost? Just what were you expecting?

The PowerColor is $370, which for its performance I think is fine. Anand's OC results show it having a ton of headroom as well. It matches a stock 7970.

I know the official release date was today. but no one has any. Maybe it was a paper launch only and the hard launch is a couple of weeks away..
