It has nothing to do with being a black mermaid, the problem is being a black mermaid replacing the original
Ariel's original identity IS the cartoon, because the cartoon IS the original Ariel.
Ask any 3 year old to point to Ariel, they will point to this pale colored red headed figure:
little-mermaid.jpg

Ask any 3 year old if this is Ariel:
drag-race-star-receives-backlash-her-reaction-ariel-remake-cast.jpg

Any they will look at you dumbfounded. She is a mermaid, she can be a Disney character. But she is not the established character Ariel and she does not share the Characters story, history, and identity.

If disney wants to write a story about a black mermaid and cast Halle Berry to play her, by all means. But write a new original story about this new original character.
How this not blackwashing AND cultural appropriation is beyond me.

All tied up in knots because something is changing, and you just don't like it.

Keep voting Republican my friend, they have your back in the resisting change simply because they don't like it department.

My full of shit meter is pegged at Max.
If Disney had done the opposite and cast a white girl as Tiana the world (you all included) would be full of piss and vinegar.

Your first goal in life should be to learn to not care about shit that doesn't matter, like the race of someone in a fictional movie meant for 6 year old girls. Things will get better once you open your mind, I promise. That pain, anger, and frustration will sink away and you'll be a better man, a man finally worth loving. I have faith in you! As an asian american, I view this not as "casting a black in a white role," but COLOR BLIND CASTING - which is wonderful and the future, even though I'm not black.

People upset by this should read this article. This has nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with wise business decisions:

"Andrew McCaskill, Nielsen’s Senior Vice President, Global Communications and Multicultural Marketing, and long-time diversity advocate, breaks it down. “With 43% of the 75 million Millennials in the U.S. identifying as African American, Hispanic or Asian, if a brand doesn’t have a multicultural strategy, it doesn’t have a growth strategy,” he says."

It's hilarious that the people so worked up about maintaining the "authenticity" of the hans christian andersen original are forgetting that the 1989 movie completely butchered the ending (the mermaid who disobeyed her father dies, fyi) completely negating the whole damn point of the original. Authenticity only matters when it comes to race, apparently. As the kids say "check yourself before you wreck yourself"- really examine why you're upset, my gut is that it has nothing to do with "authenticity" folks .

Multiculturalism done right is good, done wrong is repulsive.

Paramount did it right... they created a new ship in the star trek universe. A new black captain. New Adventures. New Stories. People love the new series.
You know what they smartly didnt do? A new series with a Black Captain Kirk and Mister Spock and Doctor McCoy.

We don't need a black or female James Bond. Make a new Character 009 in the same universe with new stories.

Disney should be loudly rebuked for this atrocity.

Damn but you seem to have a lot invested in a movie about an imaginary character that''s designed to appeal to 10 year old girls.

Man you are extremely obsessed with this. Wake up in the morning to google and see if you can find racist stuff each day. Whatever, we all have our hobbies and interests. But you’re finding this weird crap and ascribing it to the entirety of the evil that you think is "The Right". Maybe relax and actually go talk to people that have differing opinions than yourself. And don’t go into it try to battle them and thinking yourself as superior, just simply talk. I think you’ll find they don’t all care about black mermaids or whatever else you can find. The both sides mess doesn’t really work because when you talk to a lot of them you realize there’s way more sides than two.

Was it your daddy that taught you to hate your self?

So OP will be cool then when a future MLK movie stars a white actor? Or Asian? And surely he similarly mocks the trans advocates who want non-Cis actors to play trans characters.

I just quoting this for the records.

Your first goal in life should be to stop believing the lies of those who claim to want multiculturalism (which should be that cultures are allowed to co-exist, but maintain their own distinct identity) when their real agenda is a new uni-race, uni-culture population, Beginning with the policies they are trying to enact to bring about the extinction of white CIS Christian culture they view as evil and a roadblock to their utopia.

You should start out with this stuff.
It saves a lot of time if we know that you're deranged from the start.

Who or what made you the king of deciding what "WE" need? I for one would absolutely love to see idris elba or charlize theron give the 007 role a try. Do you not get how changing things up makes the world a more interesting place? I don't enjoy broadway that much but I saw Carousel's new take (featuring a black male lead) and it stirred me more than most do, because it updated the story with subtext about race and class that meant something to me, atleast more so than the original "rebel without a cause" character motivation, and I"m not alone with that sentiment. It took a flaccid old story everyone's seen a million times over and made it fresh, alive, and provocative. People who resist change aren't viewed positively by history or their peers - "old," "bitter," "boring" (and bigot) are terms that are thrown around for these folks. If culture and stories do not change/update we'll throw the stories away because they lack relevance to modern sensibilities. Are you one of those weirdos insisting Juliet should be a man in drag because that's how they did it in Shakespeare's original?

Just look his posting history in p&n it’s pretty insane.
Does he live in a compound? Are there bunkers involved?

If the answer to either of those is yes I'll look up his posts, otherwise theres way too many tawdry intellectually challenged racists on the internet to express an interest in.

Better climb back under your bed as the world at large is obviously too terrifying for you to participate in it in any meaningful way.

Michael Mann's version of "The Last of the Mohicans" was pretty different from the previous works, but it was vastly superior. I really don't care about the casting of the mermaid. I just hope she sings well because Howard Ashman (lyrics) and Alan Menken (music) deserve it.

That said, I really don't like the whole idea of these live-action remakes. So far they've all been clearly inferior to the animated masterpieces -- so there's really no reason for these to exist. According to past interviews with Ashman and Menken, "The Little Mermaid" opened their eyes to the potential of musical productions done in animation, so they doubled down on animated features and basically stopped doing stuff for the stage (was the "Little Shop of Horrors" musical their last?). The hits that followed show they were on the right track:

The Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin

...then Ashman died (AIDS, I think), and the world lost a genius. :(
