Racism is spread more easily ever since the invention of the internet

Internet is just another way for people with common ideology to meet and recruit new members. It certainly easier than walking down to the local pubs or putting up flyers. But if you're not a racist, then you're not going to be a racist no matter how the message is spread.

Why whites take the brunt of the blame for racism irks me though. It's not like any of us had absolutely any control over past events. It's not like any of us support such events. So, stop blaming me. Any given day I can overhear three of four coloured peoples conversation about their present day oppression because of this or that. C'mon.

Its much safer to call someone a 'whatever' online than to his/her face and run the risk of being punched in the nose.

Yeah, the thing with the internet is that it has a measure of anonymity way beyond normal face to face communication. People speak their minds more freely without fear of reprecussions. Those people are out there IRL, they just shut up about it. This is a good thing and a bad thing of course, but no one said you had to like what other people say...just that they should be free to say it. Even if they are shamed out of the community for it.

Absolutely not.

Better change that to "I hope not".

Yeah...I misread that. I hope not...but it is starting to seem like a real possibility.

The best thing about the intraweb is its a global network so its actually pretty hard to censor.

The internet just gives exposure to what was already there. It didn't create racism. Racism is not spread by the internet, it is spread by ignorance. It doesn't matter how much racist crap somebody spouts or you hear or read. For racism to infect somebody, they have to believe it.

You should read some Marshall McLuhan if you are interested in how different mediums sometimes change the perception and deliverance of certain concepts.

Personally (and obviously) I believe that this medium magnifies certain views - probably mainly due to the promise of anonymity that is offered. So to effectively translate some of the stuff we read here, we almost have to lessen the degree of intensity of each message... ie. in a "real life" conversation, someone may say, "i am not particularly in favour of x" whereas on the internet etc., the same person might say "i absolutely loathe x". so i think there's something to be said about the distortion effect that can occur here, and other places online.

i'm largely in favour of the notion that if you wouldn't say something in person, then why say it in another medium simply due to lack of fear of reprisal? it only serves to confuse your audience as to your true intentions.

edit: oh yeah, and of course there are real racists on the internet... and that just sucks, but oh well.

I agree...
but anti-racism also spreads more easily because of the internet. In fact, everything spreads quite a bit more easily through technology.

The dissemination of information of any type is amplified by the speed by which we can access the internet today. This doesn't just mean virtuous, wholesome ideas are propagated quickly, but so are the less desirable. We must be willing to accept the good with the bad, which means, unfortunately, that racist concepts will also be spread.
