R9 290X launch delayed

Those benchmarks are based on what exactly? The 3.67%-3.69% increases over the Titan and GTX 780 respectively in that graph can easily be realized by picking nothing but AMD favored titles. It is also peculiar that both the 290X and 290 outperform the Titan and 780 by margins of ~3.7% each...

I thought the consensus was Hawaii couldn't touch the Titan and 780. Didn't stand a chance! No way AMD can do it on 28nm!

The consensus all depends on which group of fanboys you are surveying :whiste:

The 270X was a pretty big disappointment, releasing a $200 overclocked 7870 while there are plenty of 7950 models available at the same price point wasn't exactly a stellar move by AMD. I, for one, would like to see actual benchmarks from multiple sources sooner than later so I can obtain balanced data and determine if I want 2-4 of these cards this Holiday season. I would also be open to lower priced 780 or Titan as well this Black Friday 🙂

Just pointing out how the goal posts look to be on wheels when it comes to the battle between AMD and NVidia.

We only know what they want us to know currently which isn't a whole lot of info.

I'm thinking AMD is just waiting for BF4's final code so they can optimize the 290/290x's drivers performance before they lift the NDA and announce a release date.

I don't understand the secrecy. If I had droves of people waiting to buy something I'm selling I'd keep them somewhat up to date on when you could give me your money. Hell it's like they are trying their best to fend off customers.

I wonder if the memory is simply system memory added on top. Tho without the same performance penalty as if going over PCIe for dGPUs.

AMD never publicly announced a release date, therefore it hasn't been "delayed" but they are just releasing it whenever they want. The 15th was apparently a date made up on the internet and people are saddened if it isn't true? 90% of pre release rumors aren't true. Had they said it's coming on the 15th and moved it to the 24th I'd be disappointed, well frankly they haven't so get over it.

The preorder without a price nor performance specs is definitely different and kind of strange, there's no doubt about that. At least they will give you your money back if you decide to back out on the preorder.

Hopefully AMD will deliver a polished card/drivers and not gouge as badly as the prices have been this generation.

The 15th was not made up(for NDA anyway), on the bottom of the 290 slide earlier in this thread it clearly states that the embargo lifts on Oct. 15th.

Yeah I saw that. Were those slides released (at the live presentation), or leaked?

Even Brent at [h] said it's not delayed since AMD never set a date so afaik it was never intended to be the 15th.

I can understand it. As a consumer, I don't like it, but I understand it. If this is somehow related to avoiding being "one upped" by nvidia with a 770ti, it kinda makes sense. Similar to how the 7970 was released and then a couple of months later AMD looked completely stupid with a higher priced, lower performing product. Not exactly the same situation, I know, several months apart - yet the concept is the same. Maybe AMD is waiting to see what will happen in Montreal on the 16th/17th, where NV is rumored to be introducing either a 770ti or a GTX 790 there. I'm sure that AMD doesn't want to look like idiots with their pants down as they were when the GTX 680 was released.

If 770ti were released and were priced competitively, I could see that putting a damper on the 290 non X before it even hits the shelves. So I kinda see the reason for secrecy, even though it is REALLY annoying. Make no mistake the yes, no, maybe so nature of the 290X NDA and launch is strange and annoying. But I can see how it might make sense from a competitive standpoint. I'm sure if the 290X performs and overclocks as the leaks indicate, all will be forgotten when it actually is released. On top of that, the price is solidifying to be 575$ or less for the 290X. That's a heck of a price for the performance you're getting, so like I said.....even if it's delayed 2 weeks or so, all will be forgotten if it performs as it is reported to with a 575$ or less price.

Regarding Titan ultra? I don't know. I just cant' see it. I mean, the Titan is already 1000$ and if the 290X is less than 575$ as is reported, I just can't see that being a viable product to counter. Unless they REALLY want to cement a single GPU crown (technically Titan should retain it anyway despite trading blows with the 290X), price be damned.

I've heard rumblings at some websites about a GTX 790. I think that is a pretty exciting prospect if it is priced well, much more exciting than a Titan Ultra. Just IMHO. You're getting way more for the 1000$ (estimating here) with a GTX 790 than you would with a Titan Ultra. On top of this, SLI is still better than crossfire in several respects.

No it doesnt make sense. Nvidia can play the waiting game too. They are not under any pressure to release a 770ti or whatever until AMD releases their cards first.

Furthermore, AMD can also play the same game. As they did with the 7970 and Ghz editions.

Nvidia can't cut too much in their prices either without coming out as a total ass to the people who has recently bought their GPU's.
I think they are willing to cut some on the 780, but I don't think anything will matter with Titan, it will keep its high price until it has it's replacement.

NV has nothing in between the $400 770 and $650 780, thats a big big gap IMO, with this generations flagship prices at $499.....
NV could beat AMD to the punch with reducing 780 into that gap and releasing 780Ti?....

I doubt Titan will drop at all as its a dual purpose card.

Also, if AMD prices the 290 as $500 then there is also a large gap between the 280X and 290 in AMDs lineup.

Videocardz write that Embargo on the R9 290 series is October 15th.
Internet assume its the launch date of the cards.

Internet writes to AMD on twitter asking if launch have been postponed.
AMD responds "No"

The answer is simple: Embargo on reviews and/or sales was October 15th. Launch date have always been later than October 15th. Reviews and/or sales have been postponed til October 24th. Launch date, most likely the same.

There is most likely a strategic reason (like nVidia's conference they are having) to delay the retail price announcement. Since Videocardz had announced the release of Hawaii was going to be the 15th, because of the leaked slides, the only option they have that doesn't leave them with egg on their face is to announce the launch has been delayed. If you read the article it doesn't actually state the launch has been delayed. It's presented as more of a question.
