R9 290 getting black screens after driver install

I have a brand new R9 290 and before driver install everything would work fine except the wonky resolution, but after I install the driver, I would get a black screen after the windows logo. The screen would stay black afterwards and after restarting I would get the windows repair popping up. I've tried both 13.12 and the 14.1 beta drivers as well as fresh OS installation, but I can't get past the windows logo during startup. Tried both BIOS options on the card and have 2 psu cables connected to the 8 and 6 pin from my seasonic 650W psu.

I can still return the card, but I want to try to fix this instead of going through that hassle. Any ideas?

Try unplugging any USB peripherals (except keyboard) and restarting. I had the same problem and unplugging the mouse helped. For me I think it was the specific USB port that was causing the issue.

I was able to boot into windows after doing another OS reinstall and even got the drivers working. When I ran Windows Experience Index, the screen turned black again and a reboot resulted in a black screen after the windows logo.

I would love to exchange/return. They're sold out everywhere though. Not even MSI has stock for RMA.

Many people told deactivating UEFI could help(involves formating the system). Before do it you could actualize your BIOS and search if the AIB has a new BIOS update for the card.

There's a BIOS and UEFI switch on the card. I have tried both. Where can I check if the latest BIOS is on there?

You can switch to Nvidia . There is no point trying to fix a problem someone else is responsible for.

Dont listen to this OP, you probably got a faulty card. It happens, even on the nvidia camp. Trust me i switch recently and it has not been roses like all other nvidia fans paint it out to be.

In manufacturer site(The new BIOS).

To deactivate this(The UEFI Mode), you need to deactivate the UEFI on the motherboard BIOS(and will have to format the windows) too. If it not helps, will be hard to fix the BSOD...

I'm not a Nvidia fan, infact I own a Asus R290 . It's been nothing but trouble. I sent it back to RMA, and it was sent it back to with a bios update.

Just check the reviews on Newegg. Too much trouble with R290,R290X . I would switch to 780 if possible.

Is relatively low the probability of problems. Happened more with first cards that have sent to the markets.

Sheldon, in your case would be good to get a lawsuit against the AIB, surely they will trade the card for you(every other card was traded, why your card not?). I don't know the law system of the state/country you live, but you have to rely on consumer defend services and civil forums....

Do you have the latest vBIOS (video card BIOS) and motherboard BIOS installed? Might be a long shot if the card is defective at stock clocks, but if it's not it might help.

Heh, funny you guys mention BIOS/UEFI problems. With the GA-P67A-UD7-B3, I couldn't get any video at all from my GTX 780s UNTIL a few months later when there was a BIOS release.

Not like that board even has any support for the onboard GPU, lol. Luckily, I have like 3-4 different systems and I can afford to swap a board for another which is what I ended up doing. Now I use a Z77 Sabertooth for the 780s.

Anyway, card could be busted or have some incompatibility with your system. I'd try finding out if other people have the same problem with your board and GPU too.

You think 780's have no issues?

That's the famous 780 lighting from MSI, go read the reviews.

I may go for alaw suit, but its too much trouble in my country. Emailing the customer service had no result. Also bsod s happen randomly, its not easy to show them to the court.

Forums are full of people complaining about bsods and black screen problems. So its not rare. Noone is sure about the cause, whether its a hw or driver/bios problem.

But when it works, its a very good card . Great performance and great price too. Trueaudio and mantle are also big bonus.

if you are not gonna change with something else, at least try a replacement . Most users black screens are gone after a replacement.

Civil forums... i think i said the wrong term.
I was referring to the court that helps people in the smaller cases.

And about consumer defender services i am referring to the public(government organs) that defend consumer rights for people.

I really don't know the right terms for naming the two, but is the two better options you have. Lawsuit is the last case.

In order to win in the civil forums , you should be able to prove that the hardware is malfunctioning. BSOD, freezes, Black Screens happen randomly. So i can't show them the problem. If I could reproduce it, i would be able to force the Local Asus service to replace the card in the first place. Thats the problem.

Thats why i suggest the user to send the card to RMA . Once the 15days(or whatever the duration in his local laws ) period ends, he may not be able to ask for a refund or replace without too much hassle . Just send the card back while the law is on your side. Its their problem ,not ours.

Yes, you can. Record a video of it with a camera, use Who Crashed to get access to the dumpfiles information and show them the graphic card is the problem....

i did those. Didn't work for the service. Probably won't work for the court. Since BSOD can be driver problem too.

Didn't work? Why not to get a proof that will be undeniable for them? A good start is to force VGA to go 2D->3D->2D mode as quickly as you can.

Which application can i use for that?

I use heaven benchmark, it may black screen or may without a problem for an hour.

Starting a video on youtube, or a playing local video file may cause a BSOD . But can't predict when it will happen. most of the time it works ok.

In manufacturer site(The new BIOS).

To deactivate this(The UEFI Mode), you need to deactivate the UEFI on the motherboard BIOS(and will have to format the windows) too. If it not helps, will be hard to fix the BSOD...

Couldn't find any BIOS available here http://us.msi.com/product/vga/R9-290-GAMING-4G.html#download

In the user guides that came with the card, it says "Reboot to have changes take effect." when you flip the BIOS switch on the card.

I don't even get a BSOD. The screen is just black and everything is unresponsive.
