I wanted a graphic card which can easily run today's games at mid to high settings at a minimum resolution if 1280*720 such as most wanted 2 ,NFS run.(I mostly like racing games.
These are my specs:
CPU:Intel core i5 2400
RAM : 4 GB
video card : Zotac NVIDIA 8400 GS 1 GB

I was looking for graphic card under 6000.I decided to buy Sapphire R7 240 2GB DDR3 which costs Rs. 5100 and R7 240 1 GB DDR5 which costs RS.4800.
So which one to buy?
Or any suggestions for other graphics card.

go with ddr5, probably 30 % faster. At 1280*720 u won't really need much ram anyways

What do you mean by faster?
If i 'll play with high settings on 1600*900,will it be butter smooth?

R7 250 1GB DDR5 price RS 6699

ok So,you mean its better to buy R7 240 1GB DDR5 ( RS.4810) instead of R7 240 2 GB DDR3 (Rs. 5090).

OK then Why 2 GB DDR3 has a higher price EVEN when it has same gpu?

I mean ddr5 version of same card will always destroy ddr3 version. DDR3 is *crap* for video cards. Doesnt matter if its 1920*1080 8x aa, ddr3 is just too slow.

I expect it to be around 15% faster because 384 core vs 320, and 1000mhz on250 vs 800 on r7 240

this may be a good deal in that price range. Seems comp parts much more expensive in India than US. Oh, dont worry about power consumption, those dont consume much, probably same as ur gs8400

That Tom's hardware test Aten linked is comparing a DDR3 GT640 with the R7. The GT 640 you linked is GDDR5 and will be much closer in performance to the R7 250. Also with a relatively powerful CPU and a low end graphics card, Mantle will be of minimal benefit.

I think the choice is basically a toss-up. The R7 250 will still be a bit faster, and has a good warranty, but is 30% more expensive. These are the two best choices of the options you listed. In reference to the thread title, as others have stated, dont get any card with DDR3.

R7 250 1GB DDR5 price RS 6699

You won't get "butter smooth" at any resoultion with an R7-240... it's too slow.

R7-250 is much better, but still not great.

GDDR5 is much faster memory than DDR3, and more memory DOES NOT EQUAL MORE SPEED. Only speed equals speed. Faster memory = speed.

Get the GDDR5 wherever possible, as well as the faster video processor.

Hmm originally I was talking vs 240, then gt640 is better on that exact budget. However I did convert to US$, and we are talking a difference of 85 vs 110 $, which is less than I expected, I'm just not familiar with Indian $. In this case I recommend 250, it's similar to 7750 which is pretty decent.

Its overclocked and using GDDR5. Its also noticeably cheaper.

I just noticed the huge price difference... I can totally appreciate the need for getting the most for your money, and having a very set limit. :$

After checking some more, I also agree with the 1GB GDDR5 Zotac 640.

The closest-priced R7-250 is ~25% more money and with DDR3 it won't be much faster either. Yeah... if you're that pinched for cash... it's the best choice in that price range.

Don't forget to look for used deals though!

the gt 640 gddr5 uses a 64bit bus, while the r7 250 (and gt640 ddr3) is 128bit

I would expect the r7 250 to still be slightly better,

Yes, 250 is quite a bit better than 640gt, now that I've seen more reviews, I was just too fixated on lowest possible price point
