R520 will be dual slot

Looks like the R520 will be dual slot, which should be interesting in Xfire config. At least yields are looking good and clock speeds could actually exceed 600!

MANY SOURCES who have seen one have confirmed that ATI's next generation card looks just like its previous Radeon X800XT PE card.

The reference design implies that you will need dual slot cooling. Chip will be clocked incredible high and our sources implies that will end up much higher than 600MHz plus than we suggested before.

Some of the cards have left ATI's headquarters but R520 clock speeds are not settled as it?s a matter of yields. We know that ATI will be getting in for a hard launch sometime in September time, so it has to have the real hardware as soon as it launches.

The third re-spin make the chip and yields looks good but we heavily suspect that ATI might do XT PE this time again.

You should start reading more reputable news sources...The Inquirer is only right about 50% of the time, and that's when they take an article from someone else. :)

Im hoping thats not what it took to get it to best the 7800.

Actually, the Inquirer has been right on when it comes to most video card rumors these past few months :) Except for the 22k SLI rumor heh...but maybe even that will be true for R520 in Xfire.

I like dual slot cards better actually. They generally run cooler and are quieter than than single slot cards, which are almost always have crappy coolers. The slot next to the card is always empty for me anyway.

I don't quite get their logic that because it's two slot cooling, it will be able to go over 600 mhz. To me, I see the opposite...in order to just reach 600 mhz, it takes dual slot cooling. You usually only go standard dual slot to really push the speed to outdo the competition, which means I bet this really is the 24 pipe version. Of course, since nVidia went with single slot for GTX, it's no big deal to use the best chips of the batch, toss on a dual slot cooler and really up the speed.

I would have figured the 90nm process to be cooler then 110... Maybe it's not 90nm... Just food for thought...

I hate dual slot, but this could be just like the inq rumor that G70 would draw 175 watts, they just throw alot of things at the wall and see what sticks. We'll just have to wait and see but if this is true damn you ATI.

I like dual slot coolers as well, and if that's what it takes to sell these things at higher clocks, so be it.

I want to see how this thing performs, especially since we already well know what the 7800 does. If it does well and they even make an AGP part, I'll be allll over it. If it's disappointing, I'll just do the PCI-E and 7800GTX

If they're equal, I'll go with whoever has the AGP part. In the event that no one makes an AGP part, I'll probably default to nvidia because I'm much more familiar with their drivers and such :)

I don't care about Dual slot. In fact, ill take Tri slot, if it makes the card cheaper or faster.

I dont understand who cares about ual slot, even in a sing slot config, yuo are supposed to leave theclosest pci slot open so you dont restrict airflow. Dual slot now takes advantage of that slo0t you were going to leave empty to pump hot air out, thus lowering temps dramatically.

Considering I'll be putting a silencer any any video card I buy it doesn't matter. What matters is that this could be an indication of the power requirements and heat output of the part. If even at 90nm it's going to be hotter than the G70 then it's going to be a very fast card.

does anybody know when/where and under what name the R520 will be released? I'm assuming it'll be released soon, but so far I've seen nothing but speculation.

People are saying a Fall release for the card...but no real specifics that I've seen. ATi would hurt itself very much if it doesn't release in Fall with high availability, otherwise it just gives people another reason to buy Nvidia.

And the G70 power consumption...and the G70 clock speeds...and...and...and the R520 launch date....and....

Rosy colored glasses. The Inquirer gets probably about 50-60% of the stuff right per generation. Nothing more than rumors, that simple.

A blow to the ATI followers of the past who have ridiculed the dual slot cooling of the nV3X-nV4X series, to be sure.

Personally the only opinion I've ever expressed on dual slot is that I like it, and that remains the case for me. Sometimes I even like dula slot better, if it has an interesting design like FlowFX or the Arctic Products.

I have ridiculed dual slot cooling, and thus I am disappointed in ATI this time.

A blow to supporters of SFF.

Then again, there are a lot of cards that are single slot that don't fit either.

I think if you're buying performance parts, your focus isn't "small, low power, and quiet"- it's "fast".

I feel for the LAN party crew, but I'd rather have big cards with higher performance than small cards without.

Dual slot, I love you, quiet and cool! (sometimes)

LOL, rollo, did you ever see that video where they strapped a 5800U to a leaf blower, then a hair drier... I can't remember what else, but I though it was damn funny, but non of my friends got it... my 6800U was LOUD too... but fast. If I have to have loud to be fast, then so be it :D

That is the nice thing about the 7800GTX. With the stock cooler, it's fast and quiet. The only drawback is that is is HUGE, so I don't imagine it will work well in a SFF case.

would be funny if R520 overkill the 7800GTX. Then i can forgive them for delay and the cooler.

Size of the product usually doesnt bother me as well as slots.

I have 3 slots free beneath my Radeon 9800Pro using a Zalman VF700 Cu.

I had some difficultly with my Ti 4400 and Generic Case. Id have to remove the Ti4400 to fiddle with anything HDD related which was a minor pain in the gluteus maximus.

One thing I dont really like is having to use a Molex for power. Might be occuring less and less but its an extra wire cutting down airflow. Im not great at tidying my cables :)
