It's possible.

A lot of ATI fans posted the 5900Us and 6800Us were "under engineered, over volted, and required ridiculous two slot cooling".

A lot.
Now this surprises me. I didn't think even ATI fanboys could call the 6800U overengineered. Yeah, it didn't look as strong in initial benchmarks against the XTPE, but no one can deny its superior 3D featureset. So you seem to be referring to those beyond the pale. Which begs the question, who cares about what they think?

My noting they will likely feel some regret having to switch brands or put up with a dual slot on their new card isn't a "cheap shot", it's an observation.
OK, but why would you even care about people so clueless as to call the 6800U overengineered?

Your "feeling combative" isn't reason enough for me want to enter a flamewar with you, this is just how I see it.
I don't want a flamewar, which is why I asked you not to post what you did. If you are indeed referring only to people so stupid, what do you expect from them in response? Seems like you're poking a hornet's nest. Who gives a flying fig about "diehard ATI fanboys" who bashed the 6800U for being edged out by the XTPE considering the real elephant in the room, the single-slot 6800GT?

I just don't see why you posted that except to invite a negative reaction, which is what I was reacting to in the first place. If you said it as if to lament fanboys' delusions, well, you still implied R520 would be "overvolted" by comparison. I wonder where southpaw got his ideas from....

Actually, you know what? I don't care any more. You win. I withdraw my flamewar.

Ah, Pete, don't give in....

Apparently Rollo forgot all the x850xt's and xt PE's that were dual slot, never heard a peep about them. Like I posted previously, dual slot it is good. The FlowFX was loud and slow for its generation, end of story. I had a 5900U and 6800U, and the dual slot solution on the 6800 was much worse, but the only time it felt like a dentist drill was during memtest with the case open (read: Full Speed Ahead = Freaking Annoying). And with hours and hours of memtest under my belt, well, I felt little remorse in seeing the card go... it was also the one audible thing in my case. I would be happy to see either passive coolers or nice quiet dual slot coolers on everything. Raise your hand if you hate the cooling solution on your 6600GT! How about some of those 9800Pros - it is a good thing we didn't have a thermal sensor, who knows how warm those things ran....

Rollo turns yet another thread into an Nvidia vs ATI bashfest.

Gee, welcome to the real world Zendari.

This is a hobbyists forum, I have news for you:

Any hobby forum you go on, you will find people debating one brand vs. another.

People are in a constant state of trying to alleviate buyers remorse, and convince themselves they made the "right" choice, so they scramble on boards like this to convince others of their views.

If I didn't exist on this board at all, the threads would be the same. How do I know? Go check out boards I don't post on.

So me get this right:

1) You stare at your rig with its $1200+ worth of GPU's everynight, slightly red in the face because you could have put a downpayment on a new car or bought something nice for your wife, but now you have a ridiculous amount of GPU power that you barely stress (looking at the games you have played), and thus turn your regret into flamebate on these forums? wtf?

2) Thank you oh rollo, for saving our forums, singlehandly, from sinking into boredom. How would we get along without any rational discussion of ATI products being disrupted by you roaring that nvidia is the best and ATI a meaningless pretender in the market. You say that you would buy based on performance, but I get the feeling that when talking about the 6800GT and X800XL even on PCIe you would just bring up doom3 and the "feature set" of the 6800GT and stand firmly behind that being the one and only choice a true computer enthusiast (so as to be on your level) would have. I know you bought the high end ATI stuff last time, but how long did you use it? Did you go around championing it? Nope, its like you bought just to say that you owned it and then it was gone. Sheesh.

btw- just curious here - where do all the cards you use go? I don't see you on the FS/FT forums, and I know your son gets the best of your second hand... unless you have some really lucky nieces and nephews (who I would be quite jealous of ;) ) where does it all go?

*edit* - hey, and guess what, I didn't play with your quote at all, you actually said all that! :p
