Why would you need such a fast GPU to run a game at 800x600. If you don't have a high def you be running it at 640x480. And even if did get 60fps the tv would only show 30fps. Maybe by the time Xbox II come out UXGA(1600x1200) plasma tv screens will be common. THe way to game is deffinatley on a pc becaus eof the superior garphics

THIS X-box II is supposed to pit PC gamers directly against x-boxers in online/lan play. I imagine with it's superior graphics, the X-box II will be paired with not only Hi-def and plasma displays BUT also directly to PC monitors . . . .
MS has promised a "beast" of a gaming console to - at least initially - blow-away the best of PC gaming graphics.

R480 to come in the fourth quarter
ATI'S NEXT FASTEST graphic thing will be based on 0.11µ (micron) architecture. This is the natural direction for ATI to migrate from 0.13µ low K marchitecture to pure 0.11µ without low K. When you make things smaller you can possibly clock a chip even higher, but we don't have any idea what frequency ATI is aiming for. That's exactly where its R480 chip is at this time.
We reported earlier that it will settle at more then 520MHz core and 600MHz, the limit for 0.11µ marchitecture. If you ask why 520MHz, that's simply because it has to run faster then its current flagship and still not available X800XT Press Edition. This card is clocked at 520MHz, a frequency that might be just too high for 0.13µ marchitecture. If yields are good, I would assume that they will settle to close to 550MHz, core but as you might guess it will aim to get the fastest possible frequency that it can reach.

We are also informed that ATI will use faster memory chips then its current 560/1120 MHz X800XT Platinum/Press/edition limit. You can see that even 700 MHz/1400MHz chips are available as we speak. You can see some of them here.

As for a possible name we heard about two possible options. It all still depends on performance, but ATI is still talking about either X900 or X850. This is still undecided.

The beauty of names and launch dates is that they change as often as we all change our undergarments

Yeah, but later they mention that with Catalyst 4.10 drivers, ATI gets 5800 marks vs. 5000 for 6800ultra and eve 9600xt beats 5950 ultra since it has faster PS2.0 shaders.

Appopin, I think the R520 will offer 30-40% max improvement over X800 series and no more since not a lot of time has passed. I believe that videocards double their performance roughly 1.5-2 years. Since there hasnt been a lot of sales in terms of the newest generation of cards, introducing a card a lot faster will cannibalize the sales of the existing X800 series of cards. Perhaps R520 will have PS3.0 though. This should make things very interesting. I doubt the increase in clock speed will be much past 600/1300 and 16x2.

well they were gonna have r400 werent they till it got scrapped and changed to r500, i believe that ati ahs been workin on this r500 for some time and simply pushed the r420 out the door pretty fast as a kinda stop gap untill they get this beast ready.....basically the r420 is jus a r300 based core with twice the pipes and some extra functions

nv quite obviously had to do a major overhaul to become competitive again. i think r420 is jus a time filler

On its initial release the Xbox was ahead of the PC graphics of the time.

Remember, r480 is due out this last Q/'04 or the first Q, next year . . .. that is a FURTHER refresh with a memory speed/core clock increase, .11 micron process and NO support for PS 3.0; nV48 should be the 6800 "refresh" and will be announced when r480 is. ;)

R520 - based on r400 and the x-box II GPU - IS expected to be a "beast" and also support PS 3.0 - and ALSO due in first Half '04 . . . . we'll see nV50 then.

EDIT: Yes, the original X-box kicked PC gaming graphics in the butt when it first came out; expect X-Box II to be even more ahead of the PC . . . . at least till r520/ sli'd nv50 catches up (with the gaming software, also). ;)

Most are. The Xbox is capable of HD AFAIK, but only some games support it.

In the future I'm guessing that all consoles will output to 1080i.
