Texas Gov. Rick Perry's request denied
By: CNN's Rebecca Stewart

(CNN)- Gov. Rick Perry continued his tirade against President Obama late Tuesday, when the administration's decision to deny his request for a disaster declaration for the state of Texas was finalized.

Perry requested a declaration from the president in mid-April to clear the way for federal funding and assist in state efforts to fight wildfires that have burned over 2.2 million acres of land.

"I am dismayed that this administration has denied Texans the much needed assistance they deserve," Perry said, in a statement. "It is not only the obligation of the federal government, but its responsibility under law to help its citizens in times of emergency."

And for Perry, the issue may not be settled.

"We will immediately look at all of our options, including appealing the denial, so Texans can receive the resources and support they need as wildfires continue to threaten life and property across our state," he continued.

The Republican governor, who's made no secret of his displeasure with President Obama in the past, went on to list actions that state government has taken to aid residents in distress including deploying Texas Forest Service personnel to assist with multiple fires, Texas Military Forces to help with fire suppression, and the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System.

Perry sought additional federal assistance through a Major Disaster Declaration which must be approved by the president.

But, while the request was being reviewed, the state wasn't exactly left in the lurch.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved 25 fire management assistance grants in April, specifically designed to support firefighting efforts. They cover 75 percent of the state's emergency response work for each fire, according to FEMA spokeswoman Rachel Racusen who objected to Perry's claims of neglect in a statement Wednesday.

"This administration, through FEMA, has been working closely with the state throughout the duration of these fires, and we are supporting the firefighting efforts," she said.

"Based on the information the state provided to FEMA through this process, it was determined that there was not a need for additional support at this time as the federal assistance is already being provided to Texas for response activities in the form of the Fire Management Assistance Grants."

By federal law, requests for disaster declarations are reviewed based on whether needs of the state are beyond what state and local governments can handle. But Perry insists a disaster declaration is imperative to his state's ability to battle wildfires. And according to FEMA, it is not.

With Perry's threat to appeal, the fight could be prolonged. But Racusen promised, "We will continue to work closely with the state and local emergency management officials as their efforts to contain these fires continue."

IIRC, the Gov of Texas is the third most powerful job. Why would people want a guy who isn't even the real power of his own state as President?

Ah, little Rick...

talks of secession....

begs the government for FEMA coverage...

\seems like a true GOP'er to me...

That is the point. He shouldn't have to beg for federal assistance when the state is burning to the ground. The white house is too busy putting out fires in Mexico and giving money away to every other country in the world.

Maybe he figured the only way to get assistance is by secession, then apply for foreign aid.

Texas received help from FEMA, quite a bit actually, Texas just didn't receive as much money as Perry was asking form(to cover the entire amount). Not only did they receive federal help, the also had firefighters and equipment from 48 states. All at the the same time he allowed the Texas Forest Services Wildfire Unit to be cut by 30%.

Tough to win a national election when you couldn't win your own state, ask those who tried before and lost.

Reportedly, 33 times a presidential nominee of the two main parties has lost his 'home states' where he was born and where he is living, and only 5 of those he won the election.

Reportedly, a poll showed only 4% of Texans saying they'd vote for Rick Perry for President.

But then again, Rick Perry is the first Texas governor elected to 3 terms.

The guy seems like a bad used car salesman IMO, makes Bush look like a serious political leader. He reminds me of Palin, smile and say idiotic stuff the right likes.

His record on economics is pretty bad for citizens, as I listed in another thread - highest proportion of minimum wage, highest rate of uninsured, most dependent on bailout etc.

But he just smiles and attacks Dems, smiles and attacks Dems, righties vote for it.

Fact is, his terrible records doesn't prevent him winning the nomination. A study showed only 1% of media coverage in a presidential election campaign mentioned the candidates' histories. He just needs to smile and attack dems.

Lets not forget he and his appointees took a mostly funded TRS program when Bush left office and turned it into a $25billion unfunded liability. (Sounds just like the raiding of SS by the feds).

Most politicians do not have the excessively large amount of baggage Perry has. Other campaigns already have people digging through Perry's history. If he enters it will all come out.

Well, the same could be said of W - the draft-dodging, insider-trading, coke-supplying, drunk-driving child who had his companies bailed out by Saudis wanting favors from 41.

Not to mention the whole sordid affairs like his getting a favor from Harriet Miers to keep the state lottery corrupt, breaking a campaign pledge, to reward the guy who helped on Vietnam.

He had a pretty lousy record in Texas, too, things like 'worst pollution record in the country' IIRC.

Look at Mitt Romney, worst record of reversing positions for political convenience I remember in modern history, made his fortune as a vulture wiping out American jobs. Front runner.

You guys have brought up a lot of his talking points and soundbites in this thread. The irony is that the things you despise him for are the reasons that his constituents vote for him.

Yea!!! We need to give Obama credit for lying less than everyone else did!!!

You think that's sarcasm, but yes you do.

Don't worry, you can still also attack him for the part he got wrong.

But yes, if a guy reduces a problem 90% (let's say) and not 100% as he said he would, you seem to think that means "he's worse than the guy who had the 100% problem, attack him!"

No, he gets credit for the 90% reduction, and blame for the 10% not fixed.

A lie is still a lie whether it is 90% wrong or 100% wrong.

Obama did not proclaim that he would cut back on lobbyists, he proclaimed:
"No political appointees in an Obama-Biden administration will be permitted to work on regulations or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior employer for two years."

If it makes you feel better you can call it a 'broken promise' since that is the PC term. We all know that only Republicans lie, Democrats just misspeak or break promises.

I remember him saying that. Can you show me the list of his appointees that fall into this category?

upon reading it seems that Lynn is the only one? And that he was brought in on the request of the republican defense secretary?

You're a weasel, PJ. I didn't say 90% isn't wrong. I said it's wrong and that you should also give credit for a 90% reduction. You are the one ignoring that part of the issue.

And you go on to misrepresent what I said, implying with a straw man that I said Obama only said he'd reduce the number. That's a lie.

He said he'd not appoint lobbyists, and then instead only appointed far fewer, not doing what he'd said he would.

A lie? Depends whether he knew when he said it he wouldn't do it. Something you don't know, but yet you state you do (another lie by you?)

Then you pathetically try to play the victim that you aren't treated fairly.
