So I have the CPU upgrade itch and look around online retailers. End up finding on Ebay a QX6800 for $479 which I don't have to upgrade my board for. I'm excited about the overclocking possibilities w/ an 11x multiplier.

There are q9450's for $350ish but I would have to get a new board. Are the new processors that much better than the older 65nm's? Are they worth a new board
(and likely memory to DDR3) on top of the price premium?

I don't do photo editing. Its used mostly gaming and movies? My current system is in the signature

Personally, I would get one of the $179 Q6600's, OC to 3.4, and call it good.

has anyone been able to OC their QX6800/QX6050's by just increasing the multiplier? for example from 10->11 to get 3.0ghz-3.6ghz?

or does most people just use the increase fsb method to OC these unlocked multipliers?

both.

Its funny cuz vid drops as you lower the multi.

So you'd assume, lower multi higher fsb for better overclock but its the oposite cuz of board stress and hardware stress.

As long as my fsb is over 400 and under 450 this is usually where i keep my overclocks.

I'm thinking the qx6800 would be incredible w/the 1066 bus already doig 11x266 can easily overclock to 333mhz*11 and be at 3.66 with almost no effort. That's what's getting me excited.

400 x 9 for 3.6 is doable for a Q6600. If you want to spend 3-4 times the money for 100-200 mhz, its your wallet.

:X

Until you find out the cooling requirement on that. Oh is it a B3? or a G0?

IMO, I would have done either of these two options:

-Buy a Q6600 and call it a day. It'll likely overclock just as well and for $179 vs. $400+.
-Buy a $300 (not sure if that offer is still valid) Q9450 and a new board.

Personally it would be hands down Q6600; you don't have to upgrade your board and the Q9450 isn't much better. It'll run cooler/use less power, but the 8x multiplier limits overclock to around 3.8GHz, and that's if you have a board that can handle 475 FSB w/ quad.

Damn good catch on that deal. Can you recommend a good overclocking board with that. I'm thinking an x-38 would be the best for my current parts. Are the new nvidia 700 series boards worth looking at?

btw mark, I forgot about your 8th one, I'm still 6 behind you :( at least I'm finally getting over 10k ppd in seti now...hmmm...I wonder if I could get my cousin to run seti 24/7 if I upgraded him to a Q6600 from his e6600...I could get in on that fry's deal for ~$200 after tax, sell off the e6600 for $120-$130, and let the cousin pay the electricity costs on the q6600. I might just come out ahead on this deal

why would you spend $1000 for an unlocked multiplier otherwise?

I've heard that the dfi is possibly even better than the DQ6, but it's pretty freakin' complicated and not for the n00b overclocker. If you've got some good quad and/or overclocking experiene I would almost say pick the dfi in fact, but otherwise the DQ6 would be tough to turn down.

Does this answer your question? Show me a Q9450 / Q9550 that can do that 24/7

However its a Yorkie, The ONLY QX that i feel is truely worth it.

Aigomorla that piccy doesnt show that the Q9650 is stable 24/7, since the benchmark has only been running for about a minute...

Unlocked multipliers are great and worth the expense if you actually use it! Buying a EE chip and not using the benefit of an unlocked multiplier is like purchasing an expensive full frame DSLR and using cheap glass and AUTO settings everywhere.

And apparently people do BOTH. x2

TYVM Mark and Bryan. I'm going to do the q6600. I still have to think about the MoBo choices based on this article about EVGA's 750i FTW at Guru3D.com They say it overclocks like a dream.
