One of the things that really helped me was that I told all my smoking buddies that I quit. I told everyone I knew. If I ever smoked with them again of them I'd feel like a real loser who couldn't stop. I then made it a point to hang with them when they were smoking and I wasn't. It was tough but I think that got me over the biggest hurdle. It really helped. :)

it's tough but any smoker can quit.

my tip would be to do something else when you usually smoke. ie. i used to love smoking in the car. so i bought a tin of Altoids when i quit and starting having those when i would usually light up.

trust me quitting is well worth it - hasn't been 2 months for me yet and i feel like a new person already. this is after being only a 6-7 smoke-a-day smoker. if you smoke more, the benefits are even greater.

there is a website out there that keeps track of how much $ you have saved, how many more days you have added to your life, etc. it was mentioned on ABC News this week in their "Quit to Live" series. perhaps their site has a link to it.

good luck

Are the first 24 hours the hardest? This just sucks... I'm so pissed off and snappy right now. I guess I should lift some weights or something to get rid of this craving. I also have all of this flem being produced in the back of my throat. However, this always happeneds when I go a day or so without a smoke. Wow, this just sucks.

Don't encourage him! :frown: He was on the right track as far as doing something productive (like lifting weights) to distract him...I know it's difficult but the sooner you quit, the sooner you'll feel better and start saving money. :) I've seen many people try to quit and fail because they weren't 110% committed to quitting. It's sad that a cigarette can have that much control over someone...

if you need to tell a bunch of people on the internet that you are quitiing smoking to help "motivate" yourself, you have already failed.
Mark my words, you will smoke again.

I quit almost 2 years ago after 15 years.

Just have to want to quit and you can do it.

and as noted, once you quit smoking your IQ goes up.

My parents both quit after ~20 years of smoking.

They ate sunflower seeds to keep their mouths busy, and fireballs cause it would make their tounges raw and smoking a cigg would hurt. Anything of the like would work. Keeping your mouth and mind busy are the most important things to do.

I'm not a smoker, but in general.. from my experience, it can be hard to break any habit. It's much easier to start a new one. You have to find something to fill in the time you would normally spend smoking a cigarette... ideally something that keeps your hands busy. You know something I have a feeling might be good... are games on your cell phone. For instance at work, don't go outside and stand with the others while they smoke... you don't see any of the non-smokers doing that usually. Instead, spend your breaks playing the most addicting game you can get on your cell phone.
If you have the urge to put something in your mouth, carry around some of those mint flavored toothpicks...

cold turkey didn't work for me.. i was smoking a pack or more a day most days. I had to smoke as few as I could every day for about 2 weeks.. that got me down to just 1 a day or even every other day.. then at that point I stopped smoking.. this was like 7 days ago and I haven't had one since. But I've changed my entire lifestyle; its key to do that.. or at least for me. Gum helps, food helps. When you get pissed at ****** make yourself calm down for 2 seconds and think about it logically, realize that you are wrong then move on.. urges will pass more quickly as the day goes by... at first i wanted one all the time.. then not so much, now my urges pass in like 5 minutes but still happen multiple times a day. anyway good luck, you have to discover a technique that works for you.
