I'm 20. Going out for the State Troopers when I turn 21 in 6 months. I'm going to quit smoking starting tonight. I've been smoking for 3 years. Any helpful ideas?

first all the cigarettes you still have, put them in the garbage and pour water all over them, next break all lighters, and after that tell your friends and family so they can support you. o start doign cardio and workout so you push your cigarette urges into muscle and being able to breath better lol

I've heard of people cutting the cigarettes in various lengths in order to slowly shorten the duration of their smoking duration per cigarette. Good luck with anything you try, it's a very good decision to make.

i've said it before and been right before
if you need to tell a bunch of people on the internet that you are quitiing smoking to help "motivate" yourself, you have already failed.
Mark my words, you will smoke again.

You have to stop cold turkey. That's the only thing that worked for me. Woke up on morning, said wtf am I doing to myself, gave away the rest of my carton, been smoke free for 9 months. I live in Jersey too, if you ever give me a speeding ticket I hope you smoke forever. :p

I smoked the last one this evening. I started by throwing out my ash trays, and putting my lighters away.

Sounds like a decent idea... but I figure cold turkey is the way to go.

I just may smoke again... But this is my first concerted effort to quit. I just wanted some pointers, like if u want a smoke think of something else, etc.

Ausm has something that worked for him. You should PM him. He's a cool guy and will give plenty of emotional support. I think he smoked for like 20+ years.

Thanks for the advice. LOL, I hope I make it into the troopers. I hear I might have trouble because my fathers a convicted felon. I figure they can't hold my father's wrongs against me though. I'll try to be a fair cop. I don't want to be a dick.

I will tell you this, if you dont quit now, ten years from now you will wish you quit ten years ago.

I smoked for twenty years, I finally quit for good almost two years ago, I would rather put a bullet in my brain than a cigarette in my mouth.

Do whatever it takes, get the gum, get the patch, get the lozenges, get the Zyban even, whatever it takes.

If you use the gum/patch/lozenges give yourself permission to use them for the rest of your life if you need to, you wont need to though, you'll see.

Good luck with the quitting ... one of my best friends is just quitting now. Just turned 30, and he decided enough was enough. He has to lay off the alcohol right now, because generally the two go hand-in-hand for him. He's gone cold turkey too, and has thus far (3 weeks) maintained it.

Dip the far end (not the one you put in your mouth) of your cigarettes in wasabi.
You'll think twice about smoking again.

He was asking for ideas to better arm himself for the battle ahead. If he does start smoking again, it will not be because he posted on a forum. It will be because most people who quit start up again but the important thing is to keep trying. I quit 1 other time before this time.:disgust::roll:

Now as far my advice, first and formost have NO contact with negative people. Actually see your doctor and visit the American Cancer Society. If things start to get to you, call another person who quit and talk them. They understand the things you are going thru.

Watch out for mood swings if you are a heavy smoker. Dont let it get you down as they will subside in time. Good luck

Good luck on your quest. Smoking is one of the toughest habits to give up.

(7 year smoker here...)
