I ordered some 10.2 gig maxtors from my supplier, and they sent a model different than what I ordered that where so noisy,I could not sell the system. I replaced with samsung Hdds and the customer is happy. My supplier would not give me a replacement,so I called maxtor. They are not only giving me two repacements,I'm getting a better model in the swap.No Fuss,No Muss. I'm quite impressed with this outfit. All my other Maxtor Hdds are relatively quite, but these two 31024u2's are just like earlier said, worse than dragging your fingernails down a chalkboard.

The tech support guy there refered me to thier download site to get Maxblaster.exe. Its supposed to be a great boot disk for Hdds with a more robust partitioning program and other goodies. I will try it when I get my next hdds.

Tripleshot, Maxtor's no fuss no questions asked return policy is why I went with them, and the drive being so quiet and the least expensive locked it up. I have to say that Maxtor's service and support is tops no question.

Do you guys think Maxtor a very good alternative to IBM then? I have an IBM drives and have several others and was so pleased with the IBM I wouldn't consider another brand. But I can't find the cheap 40GV 20Gb- so is Maxtor a safe bet because I heard about reliablility problems.

I'll say it once & i'll say it again Samsung drives are the most quiet drives by far.

He's a review of my Samsung SpinPoint HD.

Here's the reviewer's conclusions.

<< Conclusion

For a drive that does so well in IOMeter, the Samsung is a remarkably silent drive when it comes to seeks and idle noise. These days, it seems we're praising the acoustics of many drives, so let's take this a step further? the SpinPoint is just as quiet, if not quieter, than the Fireball lct15 and even the fluid-bearing-equipped Fujitsu MPF-AH. The Samsung, along with these other two units (which don't post nearly the same lofty IOMeter scores) form a class of their own when it comes to "silent drives." As one would expect, this 5400 RPM disk also creates little heat? it can be integrated in even cramped cases.

In conclusion, we must admit that the Samsung SpinPoint V10200 pleasantly surprises us. This spunky drive turns in IOMeter scores just shy of many 7200 RPM units in a package that's just about the quietest and coolest around. A potential caveat is capacity... the drive is available in a maximum size of just 20 gigs. If you need more bulk storage, drives from other manufacturers would better fit your need. The other drawback is availability. The SpinPoint is very difficult to find, and it's more than likely that your favorite retailer doesn't carry it. If they do, however, and you're looking for a fast yet inexpensive and quiet drive, this Samsung drive is your ticket

I have two Maxtor Diamond Plus 40's as well as an IBM GXP75. Between these two drives, the IBM is much quieter. Both Maxtors have an anoying high pitched whine noise that is constant everytime the drive is spinning. The IBM is dead quiet in comparison. Both the IBM and Maxtor sound about the same regarding seek noise; not too bad.

Misc. Ramblings:

To try to quiet down one of the Maxtor's, I isolated the hard drive cage from the rest of the chassis by mounting the cage on three rubber grommet isolators. After doing this, the high pitched whine noise was still there but the seek crunching type of noise was almost completely gone.

Also, when I upgraded my case from an Inwin to an Antec 830, the Antec was much louder relative to hard drive noise. This is due to the Antec having ventilation holes directly in front of the hard drive; great for a cool drive but bad for letting noise out.
