I assume lots of walking/jogging/exercise bicycling, lots of crunches, and clean up my diet. anything else?

crunches will make it look bigger. you can't spot-lose fat.

burn 500 extra calories a day and you will lose 1 lb per week. more than a 1000 calorie per day deficit is unhealthy. cycling is good on the joints.

you can't specifically target areas to lose fat. you will lose it all over your body. unfortunately it will probably be your stomach that is the hardest to lose it from.

oh, didn't know that. but you can spot-gain muscles? like if you just use a bar to lift weights, mostly your arms will get big, right? so why not spot-lose fat?

i tried a few things but found that running\eating 5 - 6 low carb meals a day did the trick. i didn't do atkins, carb-free didn't agree with me. good luck.

because fat isn't muscle. Doing situps every morning isn't going to burn the fat in just in your stomach area.

Because you can spot-gain muscle but you cannot spot-lose fat.

Muscle != Fat

exactly. but it will make the stomach muscles bigger, so, while you wait for the fat on top of them to burn off (in whatever order mother nature intended, so you might lose back fat or butt fat or wherever else first) your stomach will look bigger

Swimming works almost every part of your body. It will really get you in shape. Just look at all those Olympic swimmers.

4 inches eh? Since I could never do that if I tried (I'd have to lose bone), it sounds like a fairly difficult thing to achieve...any comments? Just curious is all.

Whatever kind of cardiovascular activity you're going to stick with.

Running may be more effective than, say, playing basketball at the local playground, but if you're less likely to stick with it, it's not worth it.
Find an aerobic activity you enjoy (running, swimming, tennis, basketball, racquetball, whatever) and do it consistantly. The key is to keep your heart rate up the entire time (i.e. no 10 minute breaks to calm down between games, even if you have to take it easier the entire time to be able to sustain activity for the length of your workout).

Oh, and diet. South Beach works wonders, and is healthier than Atkins, but that's just IMO. In the end, if calories eaten < calories burned, you'll lose weight.

there are two ways to lose weight. It isn't magic. Eat less and/or exercise more. I would argue that an anaerobic workout (lifting weights) is better for buring calories than an aerobic one but both work.

Running is mostly anaerobic in the first few hundred meters. It takes a time for the aerobic pathway to get activated up to speed. As you workout more and more your anaerobic will last longer (more glycogen stores) and your aerobic will kick in faster, so you won't die before you get your second wind. This is also why you don't want to run and then lift weights. You will have depleted your glycogen already, and your muscles will have less to fuel the lifting.
