The tie is not the problem, it's the black dress shirt. Black does not go with black in that way, IMO. Also, formal generally means black tie and white shirt, to me anyway.

actually you can...white dress shirt, tie and black pants without a coat can make you look like a waiter at olive garden 🙂

but i wouldnt wear a black shirt with a black suit, and yellow tie...i dont think that would look good at all
