Everything's more expensive in Japan, 500 yen for a beer, 800-1000 yen for a mix drink.

I'm currently in Japan. The prices are cheaper in the states. The yen is extremely strong right now, so it's possible your father forgot to take that into consideration and thinks everything looks cheap.
