Quick question for those who live in Japan.

Maybe when the dollar worthed something, with the current exchange rate, no way.

Everything's more expensive in Japan, 500 yen for a beer, 800-1000 yen for a mix drink.

It depends.

Newegg on sale (and especially with a MIR) will generally be cheaper.

High end is generally cheaper as well.

Mid to low end you can find better deals in Akihabara compared to Newegg normal prices.

I'm pretty sure the U.S. has the cheapest prices on computer hardware.

Other electronics may be cheaper elsewhere.

I hear they have used panties in a vending machine... sooooo

I looked everywhere for one of these, but was never able to find one.

I don't recall the prices on the electronics at Akihabara, but I do remember a sweet-ass doughnut shop there. :hmm:

Yeah, new computer hardware is cheaper in the United States compared to almost anywhere in the world.

I remember last time I wen to India I was surprised by how much they were charging for desktops, laptops, and components in stores.

Prices on newegg do not include VAT or sales tax. Even with that adjusted, I have not been able to find anywhere with cheaper prices that the USA on electronics. I live in China and have worked in Shenzhen. Unless you can really get access to wholesale prices, the USA is just plain cheaper. I was in Japan this spring and looked at products there. I called up newegg and newegg was cheaper in every case.

Market size and a more efficient retail (and online) market are the biggest reasons and low by world standards VAT/sales tax is the other (China's VAT is 17%).

I'm currently in Japan. The prices are cheaper in the states. The yen is extremely strong right now, so it's possible your father forgot to take that into consideration and thinks everything looks cheap.

If you want to check prices, you can check here:
http://www.sofmap.com/
http://www.dospara.co.jp/

These are usually the cheapest stores here.

QFT...if you are getting paid in YEN then buying in Japan, esp the electronic district is pretty cheap. However, it's like the US in that there are a lot of bad buys out there too.

If you are thinking you can take US made dollars and save a buck or two, it's a losing battle.

When my wife and I first met I could get about 160 Yen per dollar on a lucky day, and average 120-130. Now I am lucky to trade at 80.

one of my friends just recently bought a slr in japan for a good price and told me and my other friend we have to show him how to use it. He gets back here and finds out all the menus are in Japanese. LoL
