Quick math question: E * E^-1 is 1?

Basically I have two questions to answer in a take-home test. Please see the below image and post if you have any help to offer.

uh, E^-1 = 1/E, therefore E * 1/E = 1.

(E^a)*(E^b) = E^(a+b)
a=1
b=-1
therefore E^(a+b) = E^0 = 1

Wrong.. it's equal to the determinant of an identity matrix.

Most likely.. but I don't remember what difference operators in linear analysis meant.
