Yup--you're right. (And I didn't mean to come across as testy, sorry). You can just start increasing HTT. However, that will increase everything at once: your HTT, CPU speed and memory. So the preferred method is to find out the max OC of each component, first, before you OC everything at once. --since doing that will increase core clock, memory speed, as well as the mobo's HT speed. That's what they mean by "isolate and consolidate"--find out individually what each component will do. So first for example you may be curious as to what the maximum HTT of the motherboard is, (altho with a 10x multiplier that's largely academic but you might want to find out). You do that by dropping CPU multiplier and run a low memory divider before increasing HTT--that way you know you're running your CPU and memory below spec, only increasing HTT. Try that first, see see how high it goes (until you can't boot into Windows or so). Also remember to drop your Hypertransport multiplier from 5 to 4.

If you just want to see how fast your memory will go for example, drop the CPU multi, set 1:1, and increase HTT--I have this memory also and it doesn't go over 250 at all (3-4-4-8), and it does 230 at 2.5-3-3-8. You'll probably get similar results, altho with yoru setup you probably only care about the high end with 3-4-4-8.

You have the G.SKILL 2GBHZ?

If so, from another thread on here with my exact mobo combo & the same memory:

These apparently work up to about 270 @ 2.60volts
CAS 3.0
TRAS 8.0
TRP 4.0
TRCD 4.0
TRRD 2T
TRC 8T
TRFC 16T
TRWT 4 CLK

MCT Extra Timing mode Auto
User Config Manual
Read Preamble 5.5ns
Async Latency 7.0ns
CMD-ADDR Timing 1T
Bank Interleaving Auto
Burst Length 4 Beats
Hardware Memory Hole Disabled

I haven't verified it personally yet, but here's hoping.

If I can get the memory to 270mhz, then I can probably just keep upping the HTT to 270 slowly and get 2.7ghz. Right?

Yes, In fact, here's a thread on DFI street about this memory with a nice spreadsheet with everyone's results. This is specific to DFI's--if you can exchange results with someone who has the ASUS that's even better, of course, but it helped me--I have the asrock939dual. Those timings you posted look fine to me, but I wouldn't really know since my board doesn't allow for as much memory tweaking.

Edit:

Assuming your CPU and memory are both good for it, yes, you could theoretically run 270x10, 1:1. But test it already and find out how high the proc and memory will go! :)

Do any of you know much about BH5 Ram? I got some older Mushkin 222 Special ram and acording to Mushkin these sticks have BH5 chips. I didn't see any mention of them in the last 19 pages.

I've done research all over the damn place on OC'ing and this is by far the best thread I've ever seen :) I am currently running an older 754 board (asus K8N) and a non 64 bt sempron 2800+ that I have oc'd to 2.2, which isn't great, but with the K8N's bios limitations and memory issues it was about all I could hope for with this cpu.

Today, however, my new Venice Core 3000+ should be coming in and I can't wait to see what I can get it up to on stock cooling. I had a devil of a time trying to OC the semp and I'm hoping the venice should be easier. Anyone here have experience oc'ing the K8N with a venice? The bios I need to use (1008) in order to recognize the venice properly have an issue where pc3200 memory is only read at pc2700 memory with more than 1 stick and I have 2 right now, one a corsair value select and another being pqi value (they both have slightly different default timings, which sucks and another stick of corsair is about a month away). Corsair is 2.5, 3, 3, 7 I believe, and the pqi is 3, 3, 3, 8.

Any suggestions as to how to get these sticks to play well together? Will the E6 stepping on the venice make this easier?

Thanks in advance!

I'm surprised nobody has asked this question yet, but as of now, I'm quite confused:

Zebo saids to Isolate then Consolidate; so, does this mean that after each CPU subsystem test I run (Chipset, CPU, Memory), I set everything back to default settings to be able to accurately do the next test?

For example: Lets just say I finished the Chipset test. Does this mean I have to reset all my settings back to default, so then I can do the CPU test accurately?

Please someone answer back :/

Oh yeah, and the part where it saids to run Prime95-there are 3 types of test, so which one should I run?

Noob A64 owner here. I just got a 3200+ Venice and I've got a question on step 1, about finding max FSB HTT. Should I be raising the voltage at this point. I notice if I do the HTT can go higher, but I don't know if I should be because it doesn't say increase vcore like in step 2.

Thanks

Generally I would just follow the order of instructions as you read them, from top to bottom. I don't think it mentions anything about adjusting the voltage at the point where you are trying to find your max FSB HTT; just go with the flow.

Hello, all. I am a noob to OCing, and staying up til 3 am, trying to figure out stuff has brought me here to you gurus. Please direct me where to go to OC my CPU.

I currently have ,
Athlon 64 3200+ Venice (2.0)
Patriot PC3200 1G (512x2, 2-3-2-5)
Asus A8N5X
eVGA 7600GT

Similar to many cases I read, I can only OC to about 2.3 until I can no longer boot to Windows. When I tried all manual mode in BIOS, it wouldn't let me boot up at all under any settings, but when I use the AI Booster (silly built in software), I was able to get it up to 2.2.

And, this is how it looked.

I have not yet messed around with Hyper Transport, multiplier, and voltage settings since last night. What values exactly do I need to change in order to achieve around 2.5? Thanks for all your help.

EDIT: I have a sufficient power supply, and a Freezer Pro is in the mail.

unfortunately i can't help you, i've got the exact same problem.
my specs are much like yours:
Athlon 64 3200+ venice
Mushkin pc3200 LII v2 1GB 2-2-2-5
Abit AN8
HIS x800xl

i have a zalman copper heatsink and Antec smartpower 2 450 watt

I was running at 2.2ghz but after flashing my bios and messing around i can't boot past 2.2 and it's unstable even at that. I'm running 2.15ghz i dont see why it wont boot at 2.2ghz anymore or even a little more.

Even if it boots, that doesn't mean its stable, use Prime 95 as Zebo suggests to check it out & before you go any higher then 2.4ghz, I strongly suggest you follow his steps to the letter.

What's the performance hit from running an X2 in single-channel mode? Does anybody have any benches or a link to some benches?

Really new too overclocking, and my first build so excuse my noobishness but what does the guide mean too set memory to SPD and 100

Too get 100 on the mem I set my mem divider too 2/1 witch got me the 100 mem speed (200 dual channel) but bios will not post, this is with no other changes too the bios other then the mem speed

What is SPD?

"3. Next, launch taskmanager and set affinity of the first instance of prime to CPU 0 only. The other instance of prime to CPU 1 only."
- Where is this at?

Go into the applications tab when in task manager, right click the application you want to define to a certain core. Choose the set affinity option, and only leave ticked the core in which you wish the selected application to be processed on. Aka core 0 or Core 1, instead of them both being ticked.

You could also download stress prime 2004 which is a better version with a better GUI, and you can just choose core 0 or 1 from there with a drop down option (of course you would need to instances running for both cores). I would recommend this option, as it is a lot easier to work with.

I have the rig in my sig with antec neohe 500, newer revisions are compatible with the asus motherboards, that is not a problem.

I am unable to go even 240 i think without raising the volt to 1.46 or so.
At 1.4, I can go to 230.
mutliplier : 10x
ram divider : 5/6

tested super pi 32m, not ong prime 95, no time

I ran through this today and can't get into windows or memtest with anything higher than 235mhz FSB and the mem settings you recommend. I can memtest and prime95 just fine at that speed.

The system is:

DFI Lanparty nF4 Ultra-D
Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego
1 Gig Corsair XMS PC3200 2-3-3-3-6

I'm currently running 235 x 11, 2.5-4-3-7 1T Running at 200mhz

Any suggestions?

Thanks for all the effort!

I have finnished my isolation and now need some consolidation for my 4400 x2

I got ASUS A8N32 SLI Deluxe and 2x1GB OCZ Platinum XTC PC3200

Here is what i was able to isolate:

Max HTT/FSB 396
Max Chip 225@2.47 GHZ
Max Memory 235 @ 2.5.4.3.7.1T

Max chip looks really low or is this normal under other settings needed for this test?

I need some help now if somebody is willing, thanks
