just a mention to people who are using Prime95 with dual cores

the new version of Prime95 incorporates core affinity into the actual program, no more fiddling with processes in the task manager

you still need two folders and two exe's on the desktop, follow the instructions for each

to enable core affinity open prime, go to advanced > affinity

set the first prime.exe to core 0

open the next exe and do the same, except set for 1

now you can run the programs directly and simply start the tests without needed to access the task manager!

Come on mods, we need this for the n00bs ;)
EDIT: Ok, we can consider removing the sticky when everyone of us enthusiasts has jumped on the Conroe bandwaggon :p

I agree with you guys, I wish this were a sticky so I would have found it long ago.

Here's another good guide for using Prime95 on a dual-core processor:

I assume this applies to opteron chips as well? Can this get stickied again? I had to search for it.

Any advice for me? About to OC opteron 170 to hopefully ~2.6ghz.

probably not. I didn't get a great stepping of the 170, but it should still be able to get to 2.4 easily (I hope) and possibly 2.6ghz on air. I'm just going to follow the quick and dirty guide for X2 OCing...hopefully it gets me where I want to be. I'm sure I'l be posting all over this forum for help.

If you make your sig your rig it makes it helpful if you post and want help. As far as your OC PSUPef2k, what RAM do you have? My initial OC was difficult because G.Skill shipped some misconfigured RAM and it took me a little bit to notice that the timings were off. Just figured I'd mention it so that you double check them in the BIOS.

G.SKILL Extreme Series 2x1GB DDR 500 (2GBHZ), Looks like the same as you. Sig added. Thanks for the advice. I meant to do that before but just never got around to it. Scrambling to get all the info I can on OCing an opteron 170. :)

OK, So I've read this guide, glanced at several others...and it seems to me, and please correct me if I am wrong, that I shouldn't have a difficult time overclocking my new system.

Since my memory is DDR500 (250mhz) rated, should I not just be able to go into the BIOS, change the memory timings and speed to the rated 250mhz (it is running at 200mhz right now, as everything is still bone stock) and up the FSB to 250Mhz as well?

If I am understanding this correctly, and it is quite possible that I am not, then current multiplier of 10 x 250mhz FSB(HTT) = 2500mhz = 2.5ghz? Is that all I need to do to get my machine from 2.0ghz to 2.5? It has to be harder than that, doesn't it? Obviously to run it at 2.5ghz with those adjustments, I wouldn't need to worry about memory dividers either. My goal is 2.4-2.6ghz on air cooling, so I think this is very obtainable, even for my OCing n00b self.

Also, CPU-Z says that my memory is currently running at a command rate of 2T. I know I have read that the A64 chips suffer in performance with teh 2T setting. I guess I can fix that when I reconfigure the timings to get it to 250mhz.

I think the hardest part of all this will be configuring the memory timings. If it helps, here is what CPU-Z displays currently.

Yes.

No it doesn't.

Correct.

2.6 is a pretty realistic expectation for a 170. 2.8-2.9 is not unlikely from what I've seen.

Your memory timings are correct for that RAM--don't change them, except to set 1T. There is an option for that in the BIOS.

Change one thing at a time. Increase HTT by about 10 at the most each time. And all the other stuff Zebo said on the first page. If and when you exceed HTT 250 (or whatever your RAMs max is), you'll want to drop to a lower RAM divider. There is nothing wrong with that and doesn't make you a dirty person (some people seem to think it'll give them hairy palms or something).

Reread the first post, and start doing things one step at a time. I'm curious what your memory will do. Specific questions will meet with better restults than "what do I do?" That is answered in the first post.

Trust me, I've been through the guide so many times I lost count. I am merely trying to figure out if it would be safe to just start increasing the HTT slowly to 250. I don't think I even need to worry about setting the memory speed manually until I get above 250HTT because it is in 1:1 ratio, so as the HTT increases, the memory speed will as well, which is fine because it is DDR500 memory to begin with. Or so it seems. :)
