A long time ago, a friend me a Cannibal Corpse album (Tomb of the Mutilated) and begged me to give it a listen. He said it would change my life.
I simply didn't get it.

So, as evidenced in an earlier thread, I went to Progressive Nation this year.
The first 2 bands were "between teh buried and me" and "opeth"
Now, I think the musicianship is cool, but seriously, WTF is the point of all that growling?
At least with Opeth, the argument "change in dynamic" works.
But for "between the buried and me", wtf?

I'm a huge Devildriver fan, it isn't 'really' death metal but the whole growly part sure is close:
Devildriver example
Its not for everyone, but nor is soft rock.
Interpretation of a DD song, damn funny

Mike Portnoy said Between the Buried and Me's "COLORS" was his fave CD Of 2007 and possibly the best heavy metal cd of the past 15 years.
Mike Portnoy is the guy who produces Progressive Nation.
Their musicianship is unreal, and yes, the growling is just for textures and aggression. They sing too. BTBAM's lyrics are great.
Their music can be considered something like a roller coaster.. constantly up, down, turning, doing flips, loopy loops, spirals, and its just always all over the place.

He's a pretty good drummer too.

I like some of the groups like Killswitch Engage and Trivium that alternate growling with clean/harmonized vocals. It adds some dynamic and shows a lot of ability. Straight growling for 50 minutes on a CD is a little much even for a ninja!
