Between the Buried and Me is def. not death metal. Just because they use some "growling" def. does not make them death metal.

its hit or miss for me, some bands who do it i have no issues with, others make my ears bleed, personally alot of songs i hear where its done i think would sound alot better with normalish vocals and words you could understand

Death Metal Karaoke:
http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=7615

I think that's the right link...damn you websense!

As for my opinion on it...I don't mind it for dynamic effect or change ups like in Opeth or Fear Factory, but when the song is nothing other than growling like in Morbid Angel or any of the other "death" bands it just gets tiring and really kills the rest of the music for me.

What's funny is that these bands even publish lyrics sometimes in their CD's. If somebody can make sense of grrrrrrrrr goooorrrrrrr gwwwwwwwaraaaaaarrr gnnnnnnnnrrrrrrrrrwoooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrna
more power to them.

A long time ago, a friend me a Cannibal Corpse album (Tomb of the Mutilated) and begged me to give it a listen. He said it would change my life.

I simply didn't get it.

I can deal with like 5 seconds of it in a song. After that it's just stupid.

Alot of times i'll find myself saying "This would be a pretty awesome song without the growling"

Most death metal is pretty bad. However, some of it isn't as bad as others.

The voice is usually an aquired taste. The top two links below from Cynic mix death metal growls with softer vocals. Also distorted guitar and acoustic in the same song. So its rather interesting. I listen to music because I find it interesting, I couldn't even tell you how sick I am of listening to Metallica or other classic rock bands I've heard in bars a million times over.

Even though we heard "death" already earlier in this thread, his voice changed later on, and his musical talent (melodies) actually got a bit better. I like the guitar style in the song below. It's rather... Cool.

It sure seems to add a lot of suck to what's otherwise some pretty good music.

Theres a lot of death metal i cant get into, but a lot of black metal i can get into. Vocals are really just another instrument in the song.

it's just another case of not being able to differentiate between things that are unfamiliar to you. sure, metal vocals sound like unintelligible screaming when you're new to the scene, but after getting accustomed to the style, you can pick up all sorts of nuances, and yes, even lyrics.

*Flame suit on*

Opeth's growling just sounds like a really long burp.

There is so much more going on in Opeth's music that I barely even notice the growling anymore. In fact I almost feel it adds to the overall effect of what they are doing. It gives a little extra intensity to some of the heavier parts and is a nice pairing to the melodic pieces they do.

I've never been a huge fan of true death metal, but I think Opeth kind of stands on their own and I'm not even sure I wuold classify them as death metal.

To me, metal is mostly visceral in intent and growling basically appeals to your more base inclinations (they said the same thing about jazz in the early 20th). I feel kind of embarassed when I listen to my old Pantera cds - it's obviously a blatant appeal to testosterone... but that's what works when you're into that sort of entertainment (see WWF)

Just like country or hio-hop, you have to have the specific taste to enjoy it and consider it 'music'. Personally, I really despise whats coming from the rap crowd these days, but I don't listen it so I try not to judge.

I'm a huge Devildriver fan, it isn't 'really' death metal but the whole growly part sure is close:

Devildriver example

Its not for everyone, but nor is soft rock.

Interpretation of a DD song, damn funny

So, as evidenced in an earlier thread, I went to Progressive Nation this year.

The first 2 bands were "between teh buried and me" and "opeth"

Now, I think the musicianship is cool, but seriously, WTF is the point of all that growling?

At least with Opeth, the argument "change in dynamic" works.

But for "between the buried and me", wtf?

expression of rage and frustration...

Vocals in the style of something like Demilich (examples here) always made me crack up instead of taking them seriously.

No matter how hard I try, whenever I hear Devildriver I can't help but think of Coal Chamber and laugh.

Mike Portnoy said Between the Buried and Me's "COLORS" was his fave CD Of 2007 and possibly the best heavy metal cd of the past 15 years.

Mike Portnoy is the guy who produces Progressive Nation.

Their musicianship is unreal, and yes, the growling is just for textures and aggression. They sing too. BTBAM's lyrics are great.

Their music can be considered something like a roller coaster.. constantly up, down, turning, doing flips, loopy loops, spirals, and its just always all over the place.

He's a pretty good drummer too.

My opinion of black and death metal is that these people spend way to much talent and energy on something that ultimately just annoys me every time i hear it.

I like some of the groups like Killswitch Engage and Trivium that alternate growling with clean/harmonized vocals. It adds some dynamic and shows a lot of ability. Straight growling for 50 minutes on a CD is a little much even for a ninja!

Trivium is a joke, but Killswitch Engage is good.

If you want to hear ridiculous growling that even I, a lover of most metal and growling, can't stand, check out Nile. Technically they're amazingly talented (especially their drummer), but I have 1 album and I've never been able to get through the entire thing.
