Question on Win7 Install

SMOGZINN

Lifer
I have Windows Vista Pro 64 bit running on my computer now. The problem is that it is running on an old WD 160 gig HDD that is at least 5 years old (it was the largest consumer drive sold at the time bought it).

I recently bought Win7 Pro (Student Edition) which apparently is an upgrade edition, and a new Samsung 7200rpm 1Tb drive.

So, I installed the new drive, and installed Win7 on it. It never asked for me to put in my Vista DVD for authentification check, so I assumed it saw the install on the other drive and accepted the upgrade. I skipped authenticating at the time because I was not connected to the internet, but now when I try to activate my copy of Win7 it tells me that this version of Win7 can only be used for upgrades not clean installs.

So, any way to fix this?

Insert your Win7 Pro disk and do an "Upgrade" install. You'll keep your data and applications but will have to re-do any Windows Updates that aren't included in your Win7 Install DVD.

Since your install is now an "Upgrade" install, you can use your Upgrade license Key.

You may also be able to use a Registry hack that's been published:
http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install_upgrade_media.asp

The first method I noted is called a "double-install-method" and is also described in the above article.

My correction to your post is to ban you again because you're the same person who spammed the forums under another user name.

Good bye.
