Question on going from dual core back to single core

I will probably be moving from a 4600 dual core to single core Opty. Is there anything I need to do prior to tossing in the new chip? ACPI driver? Or will windows detect a single core CPU and adjust appropriately. Feedback is certainly appreciated.

It should be painless. Windows will see the new proc and load the appropriate driver for it. If I may ask, why are you going back to single core?

Well it's basically motivated by my desire to try the X1800XT and the lack of funds to buy it outright. So I figure I trade down to single core + some cash, and get rid of my GTX, and then I'd have enough for the XT and $200 extra. I'm also not too impressed with 4600's 512 L2, and no one is jumping to trade me a 170 or anything along those lines. Not that I blame them. I did get an offer of a 165 for my GTX, but then I'd need to find a buyer for my 4600+.

Phew...hope that made sense.

do yourself a favor and wait for the x1900xtx if you are set on doing this ;)

unless you are bent on overclocking, the 7800gtx is superior to the xt in every way :D *duck*

Lol. That was really funny. Seriously you crack me up.

Ok, really though, you shouldn't spread FUD like that around. Did you hear that from an Nvidia salesman? Check out a few of the most recent benchmarks if you're into looking at things objectively.

Sorry to get off topic OP.

;) If it makes sense to you it makes sense to me. Good luck, I hope you get everything the way you want it.

It's probably not worth it to downgrade to a single core CPU just to get slight performance increases in DX games. You will be much better off keeping your current CPU, since it's getting monster OC for a dual core K8. If you really are serious about upgrading your video, definitely wait for the X1900 series to be out first, or maybe even G71, if you are so inclined, to get substantial difference from the card you have now. You will need DC for games in the near future (more like a few months down the road); better save up for a few months and get the mid-cycle refresh on the graphics card or wait for the next gen this Jul/Aug.

keep the 4600+, keep your GTX since its really close to the 1800xt in performance (definatly NOT enough to justify $200 more) and atleast wait for the 1900/7900 to come out.

more then likely the 1800 will drop in price when the 1900 comes out, which should be this month. your more then likely gonna run into more problems trading off single core to dual core, than trading in a GTX for a 1800xt in the future. not to mention why do it at all since that GTX *will* last you atleast 2 years, and if thats not enough for you and you HAVE to play everything at 1600 4aa 8 af all the time, itll still last you till the G80/R600 come out. my advice would be wait a little while.
