They ARE just doing a job, and they are NOT taking a crap on your car.

If it matters so much, go sign up for that list that's $10 to register for, and $5 a year to renew. It'll keep the telemarketers off, I promise. I used it for years, and we never got ANY telemarketers aside from our own phone company.

That is exactly the issue. What's the difference between being paid to telemarket or being paid to crap on my car? In either case, you're trying to give me a service that I don't want, at the expense of my time or my money.
I could get caller ID, but that costs money.
I could join that list, but that costs money and they don't even have such a list around here.
I could get a cellphone, but that often costs more than a landline, and eventually telemarketing might be allowed to cellphones.
Or I can continue wasting my personal time answering my personal telephone (which I'm paying for, BTW) listening to some scum blather until I manage to get in and tell them to leave me alone.

Either way I lose.

There's no reason to be nice to telemarketers.

Exactly, fvck them. I hope they all die.

You wish for my death? 😱

They are invading your personal space. You go outside to get spammed with ads. But at home, you should be ad free. Telemarketers are taking that away.
Their jobs are like the sweat shops. People work there because they have to live. Other people show their disapproval by boycotting the company that uses sweat shops. Just as we should boycott telemarketers.

Hehe, they can't ever pronounce Bastedo

how did you know my name was Bastedo?!?!?!?!

That's my last name
<-----------------------------------

Were you that guy that has the Bastedo forums? I think I talked to you before.

I hang up right away if there's a long pause between when I pick up and somebody answers.. or if they speak in a really weird accent or can't pronounce my parents name or our last name right...

I don't even bother saying anything, just click and put the phone back and resume to what I was doing...

They always call when I'm playin cs or wc3, it pisses me off. I just let them start their speech and hang up.

If they use my full first name (or my dad's when I lived at home & had my own phone line in his name) they automatically get hung up on. Or if they say "Hello I'm with..." I figure if it's important they'll call back.

i'm interning for morgan stanley this summer. . . pretty much just cold calling ie. telemarketing. There are people out there that respond to cold calls, and as long as that happens, it'll never stop. So much of the broker business is fueled by telemarketing. Some people have been thinking about doing a certain thing for awhile (investing), and just never got around to looking into it, and my job is to find those people. Now when a telemarketer calls me, I just say no, and hang up. I feel guilty/bad if I'm really rude to them, seeing as how I do the same thing =\. But anytime I get a really big d!ck on the phone, I just become a d!ck back, and that gets interesting/fun sometimes. And when I call, I call from a list & have your entire information on it. So if I really, REALLY, wanted to, I could do something to your house, but that would take some incredible doing on your part.

I don't mind spam... I just delete it. I don't mind junk mail, I just throw it away. I don't mind telemarketers, AS LONG AS THEY REALIZE THAT NO MEANS NO! That is what gets me... When I say no thanks, and they keep going, it really gets me. For instance, I had a guy calling me trying to get me to sign up with Discover:

Me: Hello?
TM: Is Mr Gwaltney there (mispronounced, but thats OK)?
Me: Speaking.
TM: I'm trying to get you to sign up for Discover, blah blah blah. You get cash back on every purchase, blah blah bl
Me: No thanks, I'm not interested.
TM: Well sir, does your credit card give you cash back and a low rate?
Me: No, but I'm not interested.
TM: Well, I think you should be. Why aren't you interested in getting cash back?
Me: I just don't want another credit card.
TM: Sir, you aren't making any sense. You are dumb. You should want to get cash back, blah.
Me: I'm not interested. Bye.

I hate hanging up on people as I feel it is really rude. I would hate being hung up on. However, when people are calling to "slam" me (it has happened for my long distance plans when I had a land phone line), it is the only thing you can do to get off the phone. People like that are being rude to me. That Discover card telemarketer really steamed me. He was a huge tool, implying that I was an idiot because I wasn't interested in the Discover card cashback deal. I just didn't want a new credit card, is that so bad?

I'm polite to telemarketers because they are doing their job. However, if they don't take no for an answer, I'll hang up on them.

Also, if they call while I'm asleep or while I'm eating, I'll just tell them to call me back. They should know better than to interrupt dinner.

I have mixed emotions about telemarketers, so I usually just say "not interested" and hang up.

Its an obnoxious job, but maybe some people do it because its the only job they've been able to get and they have 3 kids at home and the father just left them. I'm not interested in pouring salt on a wound.

I ususally just say no thanks and hang up. If i listen to what they have to say I feel bad when I say no thanks later. I do get mad though when they pester me after I say no thanks though. Do they have to take you off the list if you ask?

Most telemarketers are on an automated system. They don't have access to anything other than your name. The computer does all the dialling itself....the caller doesn't even see your telephone #.
very true. they dont know anything but your name, and they dont even have a way of accessing the other info, it is never available to them.

i am applying to be one myself right now. $9/hour to ask people survey questions over the phone. cant really beat that with this horrible economy.

Fvck them. If I want their products I'll contact them myself. I don't call them, and I sure as hell don't want them calling me.

It should be opt-in only, but then they wouldn't get anyone to allow them to call.

I like telling them "Oh man, I'm taking a sh!t right now... can I call you back in a few?" Catches them off guard every time.

Do what I do. Setup an answering machine and have it start taping after 2 rings. Tell all your close friends and relatives that if you want to talk to them, leave a message saying "Hey It's XXXX can I talk to XXXX?"

That's what I do and it's just more convinient than paying for caller ID, number block list, cell phone, etc. The only drawback is that you have to hear your answering machine start rolling the tape alot. But hey, it's probably one of the best cheap alternatives. 😛

just hang up on them during the middle of their speech....

the first few times, you may 'feel' guilty.... after awhile you get used to it.

once my little brother told them "my dad's in jail and i dont know where my mum is. would you liek to speak to my foster mom?"

then he gives the phone to me.

*kat. <-- 😛

Its just a person doing their job to make a living....
That's what I'm sayin'. No point in being rude or anything. They're just trying to earn money.

There are plenty of other decent ways to earn money. My family time is extremely valuable. The telemarketers don't call during normal business hours, they call when I am trying to spend time with my family and interupt me. I used to be extremely rude to these sob's until Tennessee enacted their "do not call" list. I haven't had a telemarketer call in nearly 2 years.

I just say no, and rarely now that Texas has the No Call list.

However, I do lose my cool with Charter Communications, they call every 3 months and tell me I'll be disconnected if I don't pay my cable bill. I listen to them politely and ask why they're calling me @ a mealtime, and then let them have it-I cancelled my service 9 months ago because of their crappy billing methods, and it took 4 months to get them to refund me my overpayment "We don't refund overpayments because once we put the funds in your account, it becomes a credit & isn't money anymore" Took a call to corporate to get my $ back.

I usually end my call from Charter with, "So you're calling me to threaten me with disconnection because of a bill I don't owe & service I don't have?" They usually mutter something & apologize.

Here's how I deal with telemarketers

Phone Rings
Me: Hello?
TM: Is (usually my full name) there?
Me: No he's not, can I take a messege?
TM: No, there's no messege at this time (they ALWAYS say that)
ME: Is this a sales call?
TM: (slightly stunned) Yes sir, it is.
Me: Please put us on your Do Not Call List. Thank you
*click*

If it is a legit call for me, I apologize to the caller, explain why I just lied about not being there, and talk to them 🙂.

The only time im rude is when the wife and I are having a weekend nooner. Nothing spoils the moment more than the damn phone ringing.

I used to let them ramble on before I said "No, thanks" and hung up just b/c I heard from someone that some "tele's" get paid just for saying what they have to say. I figured that they have to put food on their plate too. Once I started getting a call every other day I said enough and bought a Tele-Zapper.
