I know what the OP is trying to figure out. Why people started smoking, even though the pitfalls were well known to them? Twenty years ago, smokers used to say, "We didn't know how bad smoking was for us, when I was young." Nobody who has posted in this topic can say the same thing. Hell, there are still many people who take up smoking even today. Why, I'll never understand!

It's too mean to say that. She's the one who cleaned your poop while you were crying afterall.

I can't understand why anybody under the age of 50 smokes.

Older people might get a pass because they were hooked before people realized that smoking causes cancer and other health problems. When I see a teen smoking I have to wonder if he is retarded or just dumb.

Started at 16, smoked till 21, quit for 5 years, started back up.

I like smoking.

i dont get the addiction.

ive honestly smoked probably 10 cigarettes.

prolly 5 while drunk

and i smoked 2 or 3 one day while working, and then 2 a week later.

never ever have had a craving for it.

my mom started when she was 16, stopped when she was about 29?

:cookie:

Get back to us when you've smoked 100.

Yeah, no kidding. It takes more than 10 cigarettes spread over a period of time to get addicted. Try smoking a pack a day for a week and then stop smoking. You'll feel the effects.

I'm an ex-smoker now.

I started at 14 to impress a girl. Stupidest thing I ever did... even though it did get me some pussy at the time.

I finally quit in my mid 30s after being a very heavy smoker since my late teens. However, I fear much of the damage I did is permanent as I discovered recently I have a mild case of chronic bronchitis.

Trust me, folks. It is NEVER worth it. Not only have I caused lifelong damage to myself, but my mother is dying of COPD because of being a smoker for over 50 years.

Smart people do "dumb" things all the time.

18, trying to quit now. Don't remember why I started, guess it was a social thing at the bars.

Edit: In fact, it was near the OP's city that I started smoking.

The problem is, most teens don't listen to advice like this. They feel invincible. I did.

I was doing some reading for a class about education in the mid 1800s and the guy went on and on about how people were spending more on tobacco products than on education, and essentially were spending more to die younger. So even back then people knew that smoking wasn't good for you. Although I'm sure they didn't know how bad it was. I think it was also much more socially acceptable for people to smoke 50 years ago and before. It was glamourized.

I've never smoked, but both of my parents used to (my mom quit, my dad still smokes). They both started young.

Yeah, I didn't listen either. I figure most have to learn the hard way but hopefully somebody will listen to the warnings.

Y'know, it's one of those things - you can read and hear all you want, but it just doesn't have much sense of urgency until it's your own pink foamy lung chunks that you are coughing up.

I started smoking cigs at 10, pot at 15, quit pot at 19 and smoked cigs up until last week Thursday at 11 pm CST. Upwards of 2-3 packs a day.

I have no idea why I quit, I just went to work one day and said bleh, and haven't lit up again, nor do I want to. I do still "crave" the cig.

Started smoking around 17 years old, I'm 49 now. I'm the only smoker among 3 kids, and both my parents smoked. I have quit twice now, once for 2 weeks and the second time for almost 3 months. I collapsed a lung before the 3 month stop, but my girlfriend(at the time) smoked around me all the time so I tried JUST ONE, and started again. Now I am looking for a good way to quit for the last time. Any good suggestions for an old smoker?

I had a smoked a few packs when I was 14 but it burnt so bad when i inhaled i would just take a drag, hold it a second and exhale it. Pretty sad. just to look cool around friends.
