Question for smokers?

A little research here.

I live in an area of a high population of smokers, most start young. Its more of family tradition here than anything.

So, how did you get started and how old were you?

Thank you.

I started in HS and kept smoking for almost 20 years. Mostly because the people I hung out with smoked. Nobody in my family smokes. I quit several years ago.

started at 18.

I had gotten my hands on some mary jane, and i wanted to learn to smoke cigarettes instead of wasting the joint.

and then i smoked occasionally where i worked (movie theater) because it was a boring job, and it was something to do while i was stuck in the box office...

but im really more of a casual/social smoker...

and im 23 now. it takes me ages to finish a pack, and i really only smoke when im feeling angry, or drunk.

I would guess 14-18 is when the majority starts.

I don't smoke, but my brother started at 17 if that helps with the research.

All my friends smoked. I started when I was about 15. 8 months ago I quit for good. I did a pack a day for about 10 years I'm now 28. It's not worth it.

around 19 years old. it was something i did when i was out having a drink or something, and it is still the same way years later. it takes me forever to go through a pack though.

same as yobarman - freshman year

i had tried it in HS a bit. one weekend i just walked to the variety store and bought a pack. i think it was mainly due to boredom  most of my friends in res would go home for the weekends.

in the last month i have had about 3-4 cigs. i stamped it out mostly. i was up to about 1/2 pack a day.

i never recognized any benefits and the negative aspects are astounding. had to quit.

Started when I was 15. Quit for eight months when I was 18 then started right up again like it was nothin'. Still smoking today, gotta find a good way to quit.

Started at age 18. Everyone at McDonalds smoked.

Went from Basic Light Menthols to Basic Lights to Marboro lights to Marb Reds to Camel Lights.

Quit a few months ago at age 28. Was basically only smoking when I drink so it wasn't very difficult to stop cold turkey.

interesting...

Most do start young. It is rare, although it does occur, that peoples start smoking later in life. It may go without saying then that the ANTI SMOKING campaign has a great aim on the susceptible population.

My mother smokes and it is killing her...it is all she cares about, and now she is morbidly obese. She just moved down here with my dad. Great, now me and my children can watch her rot. I just do not get it I guess.

I started when I was 17 because my gf at the time smoked. I quit once when I was 24 and the dt's were a real bitch. I unfortunately started again and now I quit for good when I was 39 and have been smoke free for 1.5+ years. Don't start! It is a total waste of cash and also terrible for your health. People who think they can smoke a "little" and not get hooked are only fooling themselves.

I don't get the addiction either. I have smoked a few and I never felt anything from them and never felt the need to smoke them again. Does nicotine affect everybody?

I don't smoke tobacco, because I don't see anything in it, really. I smoke the occasional Sheesha/Hookah, mainly because I like blowing smoke rings :)

It may affect people differently but my cig problem was progressive. I started smoking once a day until I was up to 2 packs/day then I slowly decreased my smoking over a 5 year period. It took that long for me to get enough balls to stop.

When I was a smoker I would have crawled on my knees in a snowstorm to buy smokes if I ran out.

Don't ever start because IF you become addicted you will have a looong hard road to kicking the habit.
