False.

Although judging by this thread, companies have a wide-range of setups, so office doesn't always show status.

I was just poking fun :p

Yep. I had an office, but then they tore that building down and build a new, fancy one where all the personnel are in cubes (save the VP-types). It sucks, but at least I have windows now.

I'm jealous of you cube guys that get windows. At our building all the offices are on the edges so they have the windows, and all the cubes are in the middle of the floor, so the only thing we can see is the offices.

We don't have offices. We don't have cubes. We have an open concept. Desks, no seperation. Everyone from CEO on down has the same setup.

Only senior leaders have offices in my building. Unless your are a AVP or higher you get a cube (although the front line leaders bosses have taller cubes until the renovation we are in the middle of is complete).

Chevron has basically a no office at all policy in the Houston HQ..
Only SUPER high execs have one..

Even Senior VP and Director level employees have a "large nice cube" but it's still a cube.

officially based on the number of direct reports...of course there are lots of quite schmoozing going around as several people don't have reports and still get an office. so technically, a staff engineer with 4 direct reports should have priority over a manager with 2 reports...

i don't mind my cube as its a decent size. I'd prefer a 10x10 cube; I think mine is 11x8

It's not to encourage 'collaboration and Innovation" - It's so the people around can easily see if anyone is screwing off at work. And also because anyone who would be inclined to screw off at work would also be perfectly aware that everyone else can see at a glance what they are doing.

So nobody spends time on non~company~work, and productivity goes up.

Wrong. What happens is that you get to hear every single phone conversation and it's distracting as hell. Also gives interesting insight into peoples lives. At my last place of work, it was a fairly open area where conversations could be heard from across the room. Apparently the secretary's husband is an idiot who spends money they don't have, their house cost $400,000 and they're struggling to make payments, and their roof is leaking. I never even talked to that person and I know all that.

Only Managers, Directors, and Execs get offices here. I work enough as a lead analyst, don't wanna move over to mgmt and get stuck putting in even more hours...

my old job i had a corner office that i shared with someone. had 6 windows so it was nice.

my newer job we have these things that are like cubes, but only 2 sides and our monitors are in the corner of the 2 sides meeting. and then someone has one next to me so i can see him when i turn to the side. also have much nicer chairs here, those real expensive ones w/the netted backs to them., real comfortable. i'd consider these 'high end cubes' heh.

after working in this enrivonment, i cant believe how useless offices were and how much of a waste of space htey were. i actually like this 'cube' environment more. instead of everyone off away on other sides of the building, we are all close by and can easily walk and talk to eachother when we need to interact. plus if you wanna bs sometimes you can just turn the corner instead of walking accross the building.

the only downside is sometimes it can get noisy. other than that, i don't mind it one bit.

edit:

even managers don't have them here. granted i'm a sub contractor working on site of the client, so that is why we don't have tons of room. the actual offices here ... some of them are ridiculous.

I work for a Fortune 500 company and neither managers NOR directors get offices. VP and above only!

We have no offices - we don't even have cubes - we have call center style desks to pack us in.

Going from a 8x10 office with a window view at my previous job to this is quite the change.

Turned down three chances to move into an office, they quit asking. It's better for me to be in the middle of the group than away from it.

That sounds...depressing... :p

It's great. Tons of desk space, if I need to work with someone I can just roll over. Besides if/when we buy cubes it comes out of our paychecks, so I'm really happy with cheap tables. Cubes cost money.

I have an office I share with one other person. It has a private entrance and I have a north facing window with views of desert and mountains. I can usually park my car within fifty feet of the door, seventy five feet at worst. Naturally we are planning a new office where I will be in a middle-of-the-room cubicle.

Same setup where I work.

I swear I thought it was some shell corporation when I walked in for the interview but it actually increases productivity exponentially.

I have an office. I put cubicle furniture in it. I like cubicle furniture better than standard office desks, more efficient, more storage space.

We only have a limited number of offices at work, especially in the IT area. Luckily in our office, IT has a room with a door so we have a ping-pong table, fridge, microwave, couch and a wall of windows. They offered up large cubes to the managers but I told them I didn't want it since we would not have enough room for our ping-pong table.

I do have an office.

I just happen to share it with 3 other people.

It's ever so slightly cramped...
