Question about XP auto update

When I installed XP I disabled the remote asistance, Auto update, and MSmsg immediately. Anyways, I decided to enable auto update to save me the effort. Well, it started the process last night but seems to be stuck at 32% complete. It's been at 32% atleast 9hrs now. Should I disable it again and do the updates myself? It's not paused and I have RoadRunner so, it's connected. Advice would be much appreciated 🙂

Thanx for the advice 🙂 Sometimes you just need to hear it from someone else, ya know? I'd never let any version of windoze do anything for me on it's own before and now I have a good reason why! I went ahead and did it myself, it took all of 90 seconds to get the 6.5mbs of updates I needed 😱 That'll teach me not to be lazy.

could someone give me a description of these and how to disable them? its not for me (dont have XP yet), for a couple of friends.

remote assistance is in control panel/ system / advanced Im prtetty sure that auto update is in either run/ services.msc or run/ msconfig you'll find some other interesting things there also !

Well, Remote Assistance is a utility which if someone needs help with their Windows XP computer, or vice versa, you can give/receive help. If you were to help someone out, you would be able to see their screen and control everything. Auto Update is a service which Windows periodically checks Windows Update to see if there's anything critical your computer needs. And, MSMsg is Windows Messenger/MSN Messenger. If you don't use it, but you use Outlook Express and Hotmail, it tends to pop up.

To disable Remote Assistance:
System Properties (WinKey + Pause) > Remote tab > Uncheck "Allow Remote Assistance invitations to be sent from this computer"

To disable Auto Update:
System Properties (WinKey + Pause) > Automatic Updates tab > Select "Turn off automatic updating. I want to update my computer manually"

To disable Windows/MSN Messenger, it can be found on my website: http://www.geocities.com/btvillarin/WindowsXP/customizations.htm
