Question about Whey

isekii

Lifer
Does brand Matter ?

I'm all out of my Promax 50gram protein shakes...

I saw Designer whey at Ballys for 23.99 -20% off which would roughly be 20 bucks a canister...
No bullcrap about shipping and such.. so I guess that's a plus.

Would a different brand be any different ?

What should I look for ?

Thanks

i do, while i'm not an expert i've heard that you should stay away from those with relatively high levels of cholesterol compared with others... (i think GNC may have high levels)

i myself use Vitamin World's generic stuff...vanilla...use a blender for it to taste the best, don't mix by hand

hm... well i dont have high cholestrol to start with... I use a bottle and I shake it violently to mix it..

No blender 🙁 It would be nice if I had one i'd make cold iceshakes.

I tried Designer... while it worked well and tasted pretty good, it's still pretty expensive. At that price it's worth a shot just to see if you like it.

Fat content is pretty low with Designer and it mixed pretty well by hand.

I currently use EAS Simpy Protein (Whey) from Vitaglo.com.. best I've tasted... a few people on ATOT including myself are very happy with it. If you want the hardcore nutritional breakdown of what is better biochemically... best to try one of the bodybuilding forums like Wannabebig, MuscleMag, etcetc.

I get Optimum Nutrition's 100% Whey. It is quite popular from what I've read and heard. My last shipment was $57 to my door for 10lbs of it. That should last you a while. Something like 180 servings in it, 22grams of protein per serving, very little carb and very little cholesterol compared to others. I can find the link for the price if you are interested. Otherwise search the boards, I've participated in a number of whey/protein discussions here before.

Designer is great....the only stuff I can really hold down (I gag pretty easily). The $20 for 5lb stuff tastes alright to pretty bad, so be forewarned. The quality of the whey proteins is virtually the same from brand to brand, what's important is getting the proper protein/nutrition intake to supplement your diet.

To get enough protein (at least a gram per lb of body weight), thats a helluva lot of beef and chicken to be eating...

My family is kinda big on meat...
but not all comes from Meat itself tho... a lot comes from Tofu and shiz as well..

The only time you should be taking whey protein in my opinion is post workout - whey protein is fast absorbing as to
transport nutrients to muscle cells very quickly, so ideally it should only be used post workout with high GI carbs or possibly
with breakfast. For other meals I would stick to lean meats, egg and milk protein for a slower release without
an insulin spike.

Huh? I'd hardly agree that quality of whey proteins are the same among brands. There are a myriad of types of whey proteins including CFM, hydrolized, concentrate, isolate, and so forth...not to mention the differences in carbohydrate and sugar content.

The best kind of protein for post workout purposes is hydrolized/isolate, with the worst type being whey concentrate. Sugars should
also be kept minimal in an ideal protein.

I get this stuff too.. 25 bucks for 5 lbs of any flavor from www.allsportsnutrition.com . Good vendor. When mixed with milk it tastes very good.

Not all Wheys are the same as aforementioned.

I'm currently almost finished using 3 5lb tubs of the EAS Simply Whey over a span of about 3 months. I've gained a whopping 6 pounds (sarcasm), yet my bench has gone up from 225 to 265 (repping) so I'm getting stronger but not gaining the mass I want. I had been taking 3 shakes a day, then ramped it up to 5 a day for the past 3 weeks to get rid of the stuff... I wasn't gaining any weight at all with the 3 shakes a day, but with the 5 I gained most of the weight... I think this is because the EAS shakes use half whey concentrate, which is stuff they use in cake mix!!

I might order some more of this stuff since it was so cheap (vitaglo.com) but I'm switching brands to AST's VP2 Whey Isolate which can be found Here. It's about twice the price of the EAS but you get what you pay for. The official description can be found Here. I have a buddy who's on it and he's noticed results within the first month... Keep in mind, when taking any Whey Protein be sure to employ the "bracketing" method. This means u take a shake before your workout, and another within 45 minutes after your workout. I take these 2 with water, and not milk, for maximum absorption. If you need more information on powerlifting workouts or whey questions, feel free to PM me.

I could be wrong here, but whey protein is not going to put on a lot of mass anyway. In fact you should be quite happy that your bench is going up (i.e you are getting stronger) but you are not getting fat, and 6 pounds of pure muscle in 3 months isn't horrible. If you want to gain weight use something like N-Large or another weight gainer type of stuff. From my understanding Whey Protein is for putting on muscle gains and maybe some lean mass (a typical shake has approx 200 calories when mixed with skim milk so that isn't a ton).

Wrong indeed. Of course whey protein alone will not help you gain mass, to gain mass you must have adequate calories , adequate training and sufficient rest. Whey protein helps send the proper nutrients to the muscle to stimulate growth, but to attain growth proper training and plenty of calories are necessary - and weight gainer is a terrible idea unless you're an ecomorph. Most weight gainer powders have a ton of sugar which will surely do nothing except expand your waistline...

I don't get it. You said I was wrong, then you agreed with what I said just slighty reworded.

😕

Put simply: whey protein and adequate overall calories both work hand in hand to help promote muscle growth. Using weight gainer in place of whey protein in my opinion, is silly because most of the weight gained will be lard.

Hell no. Different brands contain different levels of concentrate or isolate whey. Also, some throw in other stuff as well, like glutamate. Personally, i like Designer and Prolab... Prolabs is actually cheaper than Optimum, and the Designer is only a couple of dollars more than the Optimum... but they both taste MUCH better than the Optimum.
