Question about Top Gun

That's what Goose gets for not converting to scientology. 😀

BTW - they weren't Mig 31's at the end either. Just F5E aggressors.

I've seen enough F14's at air shows to know that yes, they do indeed fly like that ,and Tomcat pilots are insane.

Slow canopies have been problematic since ejection seats first came into service. Some planes didn't even blow the canopy. They had a shield built into the seat over the pilot's head and shot him through it.

Ejecting from an airplane is risky at best and injuries and death due to it is not unheard of.

Dude, its just a movie.

Hmmmm....

Anyway, found this:

The ejection scene where Goose is killed is impossible. There is a lanyard in the back of the canopy that does not allow the Pilot/RIO seats to eject until it has reached full length and pulled out a small pin. I.e. a good thirty feet behind the tail of the aircraft.
...when they go into a spin, and have to eject. Goose boinks his noggin on the canopy as his ejection seat rockets out of their doomed, crippled plane. Maverick takes it hard. But, actually, on an F-14 the canopy is blasted away from the aircraft with explosive charges and is carried away by the airstream a significant fraction of a second before the seats fire. To my knowledge, it has never happened that a flight crew member has collided with the jettisoned canopy after ejection.

I think the worse scene in "Top Gun" is the big romantic moment between Tum and Kelly McGuiness...

The long pause as he touches her face, caressing her, kissing her, then saying: "you remind me so much of my brother...."

fixed

Do you think Tum takes Tums when he has an upset stomach?

😀 All I know is Tum gives me an upset stomach...

To completely derail the thread, do you have any of your old photochops around from back in the day?

IIRC, the rearseat guy ejects before the front seater (so that they don't collide?). The canopy scene is still unrealistic, the canopy should not have been there, but since when is an emergency situation entirely predictable. Ejecting is not normal operating procedure.

Sure it is. It's part of the crash procedure. 😉😛

As a last ditch effort. 😛
