Question about Top Gun

NFS4

No Lifer
How is it that Maverick managed to avoid the canopy, yet Goose took a direct hit? When Goose hits the canopy, it's pretty much in the standard open position. Given that the seats are tandem, wouldn't Maverick hit as well?

**It's just a movie is not an answer** 😀

I thought that the canopy gets explosively blown off (not just put in the "open" position, and Goose was unlucky enough to hit it because it wasn't blown far enough away.

I haven't seen the movie in years though 😛

IIRC, the rear seat ejected first, which knocked the canopy out of the way for Maverick

IIRC, Goose sorta just bounced off the canopy instead of really pushing it up any further.

Actually the death rate for ejections is higher than you would think, and I do not remember him hitting the canopy, but it is very possible his spine was broken from twisting around in the wind etc.

Also if the pilot is not restrained in the right position the ejection could cause problems.

Another problem is when the centripital force of the spin of the plane (which I remember the plane was) is too much for the firing rockets of the canopy, it is possible for the canopy to not be ejected off properly. Although Goose's body would not have been able to move it out of the way, even though the rocket under the ejection seat is stronger.

Then of course it also depends on the type of jet and the controls. In some two-seaters the canopy is released and each pilot ejects seperately under their own control, and this could be changed by controls in the pilot's cockpit.

Either way, this is just another reason for NFS4 to hate Top Gun, an amazing movie.

Dude, its just a movie.

Hmmmm....

Anyway, found this:

The ejection scene where Goose is killed is impossible. There is a lanyard in the back of the canopy that does not allow the Pilot/RIO seats to eject until it has reached full length and pulled out a small pin. I.e. a good thirty feet behind the tail of the aircraft.
...when they go into a spin, and have to eject. Goose boinks his noggin on the canopy as his ejection seat rockets out of their doomed, crippled plane. Maverick takes it hard. But, actually, on an F-14 the canopy is blasted away from the aircraft with explosive charges and is carried away by the airstream a significant fraction of a second before the seats fire. To my knowledge, it has never happened that a flight crew member has collided with the jettisoned canopy after ejection.

Talk to me, Goose!

From what I remember, both kinda smack the canopy. It was just bad luck for Goose that his parachute never opened while Maverick's did.

Again, its just a movie 🙂 Think about how James Bonds characters avoids bullets and survives 50 foot jumps off of a building, no matter which actor is playing the character. No, they aren't all just really strong and resiliant, its just a movie 🙂

PS Rumor has it that those aren't even REAL bullets they are firing! WTF I've been had!!!

I think the worse scene in "Top Gun" is the big romantic moment between Tum and Kelly McGuiness...

The long pause as he touches her face, caressing her, kissing her, then saying: "you remind me so much of my mother...."

Do you think Tum takes Tums when he has an upset stomach?

😀 All I know is Tum gives me an upset stomach...

I don't feel like putting the movie on right now, but doesn't the front blow off then the back follows? That would give it enough time to get away from the plane when Maverick gets the hell out.
