question about toast

eakers

Lifer
you know when you are making a toast and you say "here here"
is it "hear hear" or "here here" or something else all together?

It's "Hear, hear".

really? i always thought it was "here, here." i guess "hear" makes more sense, but... eh, it's not like i've ever written out in my life before 🙂

The correct term is, "hear, hear!" It is an abbreviation for "hear, all ye good people, hear what this brilliant and eloquent speaker has to say!" source

edit: a minute to late 🙁

I always thought since a person makes a statement before the toast... afterwards they say "Hear Hear" is so that people take to heart what he is saying and appreciate it.

I figured this thread was going to be about atomic element #6, but I was wrong.
