question about retail heatsinks on Athlon XP

Is the retail heatsink that comes packaged with the Athlon XP 2000+ Thoroughbred (B) any good ? I mean does it cool adequately (~40C)?
Does it make a lot of noise ? I'm not ready to pay much for an aftermarket heatsink so I really want to know about this...
Thx in advance

I've got an Athlon XP 2100+ w/ Retail HSF and i get ~50c idle, 63c load (after prime95) with a 19c ambient case temp. As far as noise, I cant hear it at all over my 6 case fans + 2 PSU fans + HDD.

In about a month im going to invest in an SLK-800 + a nice fan w/ some ASIII to cool my processor, as the retail isnt an adequete long term solution IMO.

Of course it's good, AMD warrantties their processors only with their retail heatsync and fan! It's not super temps, but certainly not bad.

its not superb, but it does the job

Its quite loud though. I suggest getting an svc-gv68 and a ys-tech fan from svcompucycle for about $10. Or better yet, get the ax-7 for $20.

I have only seen 2 different stock HS/HSF that come retail. A thick finned HS and a thin, but more of them, finned HS, both with 60 mm fans.

Unless you are going to overclock the retail heatsink\fan are effective and as Justorq as stated AMD gives it a three year warranty. If the heatsink is installed properly and the system is stable, I would not worry that much about the cpu temperatures.

Concerning noise, the PSU, video card, and hard drives fans in my system produce much more noise than the Athlon XP retail heatsink\fan. And when the Yamaha F1 cranks up..... forget about it.

My XP2000+ with Retail HS/fan runs in the 50s, my case temp is in the upper 30s. I have an Antec Gemstone case which is NOT designed for the heat generated by this chip. I gained about 2C by REVERSING the CPU fan and the ducted case fan which was blowing onto the CPU fan, now insteading of blowing cool air in, I am sucking the hot air out, it seems to be an improvement.

are the heatsinks different for the palomino and the tbreds different?

the heatsink that came with the palomini 2000+ i got looks pretty decent, probably even usable for slight oc. looks just like one of the coolermasters i have, cept nits not made of copper.

thx... another question .... is it only coolermaster that makes their retail HSF ?

P.S.: I'm sorry if you guys think I'm asking too many questions, but I really need to know this info cuz im buying it and it's gonna be in my room, so it can'T be too loud.
Thx in advance for your answers people ...

I run two 2200+ systems (TBred) with retail HSFs they never pass 44C even under load (standard Antec 630SXII cases [no extra fans]...room temp ~18-20C).

I'm not sure how much more heat the 2000 generates, but I just built a system using the 1700 w/ the retail HSF and I was impressed by how well, and quite, it performs. The only drawback I experienced is that it was probably the hardest clip I ever had to put on! I just knew I cracked the CPU trying to clip it on but as luck had it I didn't :Q I've always purchased OEM CPUs and a 3rd party HSF but in the future I'll probably continue to buy retail if stock performance is that good. I don't overclock so the HSF provided should always meet my needs.

clever idea..use retail heatsink and a 60 to 80 adapter w/ a Sunon,YSTech, etc. 😉 ..as always YMMV 🙂

i use a coolermaster hcc-002 wtih a 1500rpm 60mm vantec stealth fan and its just fine. nice and silent. it came with a 6800rpm fan but that would make me deaf. unless your case has really lousy ventilation, a slow fan will do. i run around 50c. i have a 92mm fan blowing in my case from the side, also a low rpm fan.

if u don't have good fan mounts or ones with pitiful ventilation, get a saw or a dremil and cut one.
