I'm not going to get involved in the bickering taking place in this thread but I do want to address the initial post.

I have had much better luck with ATI cards on my NF3-250Gb motherboard than I did have with NV40 based cards. I've tried both a 6800OC and an eVGA 6800GT and both had problems with FW working and a few other niggling problems. I don't have any of those problems with my current X800XL or my previous 9800 Pro or X800 Pro.

Take that for it's worth.

HEY EVERYONE...its your broken record here...

bottom line...just get an Nvidia 6xxx card. why? shader model 3.0!!! that will be needed for future games

;) but to answer your question...um, i really see no performance advantage with using an nvidia card with nvdia mobo

They have some out right now for the Intel CPU, and are starting to bring out stuff for the AMD side too. Its just really difficult for them to get into a market dominated by VIA/SIS/nVidia and Intel (for the intel CPU side of things) most of the motherboard vendors dont see a need to start spending more money on another chipset. But hopefully the performance numbers will shine through as Anandtech as benched them and they are comparable with the latest nVidia offerings, which is saying something for ATis first round in this market.

yeah jus look round at benches (using nforce systems) ATI cards do no worse, and most of the time are faster on Nforce chipsets than any other chipset

it would probably illegal for them to make the oppositions cards bad thru their hard ware. if not illegal, immoral

I have seen reviews that showed nv board+nv card and ATI board+ATI card resulted in slight performance enhancements in some games, but never enough to be a deal breaker.

No, it wouldn't be for a lengthy list of reasons not the least of which is nVidia is third in the broader chipset market. Forget monolopy, plurality or even close competitor, they are a distant also ran as of this point. Furthermore, ATi is a direct competitor in both the chipset and add in board markets and one with easily comparable resources. IF nV were to completely break all compatibility with ATi boards and publicize that they did it to force users to buy nVidia graphics cards it would not come remotely close to being an anti trust issue, the assertion is rather laughable looking at all factors actually.

It being an antitrust issue would be contingent on NVIDIA (or whoever) having a monopoly or near-monopoly on the chipset market, which they do not. I didn't mean to imply they did.

Imagine for a second if VIA and SiS didn't exist, and ATI didn't have a chipset. NVIDIA would undoubtedly have practically all of the AMD-based motherboard market, simply because there wouldn't be any other players. If they then were to break support for ATI's graphics cards on their chipsets, I think it could certainly be viewed as an unfair anticompetitive move. IANAL, however. :p
