Question about "natural" bodybuilding

OK someone correct me here because I'm really shocked at the size of some of these natural guys. So the different organizations have different protocols with regard to testing; type, timing, etc. What are the penalties for failing a test? Is it something where these guys are timing cycles such that they aren't testing dirty? Or are these guys truly not using banned substances at all?

To use an analogy, in the UFC there have been several fairly well-known fighters who've failed a test - Leben, Bonnar, and Sherk come to mind - who go away for a bit then come back, ostensibly unaffected by their temporary ban. I'm not bringing Sonnen in here; he's still not back. That said, what happens if they (natural pro bodybuilders) fail a test? Slap on the wrist? Short ban from competition? Long ban?

It depends on the organization. INBF bans for 7 years after the failed test. However, that doesn't mean people don't use, many just find ways to beat the system. Also, keep in mind some organizations only do a piss test, some do a polygraph, and some only test the winners. Even the ones that do pass may have used something during their prep that was out of their system in time for the show. Ephedrine is a common one since it has such a short half life, yet INBF rules state it must've not been used for 6 months prior to first joining.

It's a sad reality, but I'd say at least half of the guys at any natural bodybuilding show are on something. It's something I know I'll probably have to deal with when I do my first show this coming October, which is why I'm not going to bother worrying about anybody else at the show, just be the best I can be.

Very interesting. I kind of assumed that was the case, but I wasn't sure. Thank you sir, and good luck with your show coming up.

They don't have to prove they are "clean" for X amount of time (usually 7 years), they just have to not get caught with a "dirty" test for that amount of time. Obviously, lots of these guys juice and do other things. HGH is very difficult to test for, and it's nearly impossible to get caught unless you are still on it up until the day you are tested.

Then, some organizations will allow certain hormones/prohormones (a.k.a. oral steroids), just not the ones that are illegal, although they may be precursors to illegal anabolic steroids. So in reality, there is very little that is "natural" about natural bodybuilding.
