Question about "incentive pay" on a new job I may have.

I've been looking for a summer job while in college and yesterday I had an interview with someone at a company called "Vector Marketing" and they gave a pretty enticing demonstration on what to expect if I sold products them... I would visit customers (with pre-setup appointments) and try to sell them this company's product (I believe they sell products from a company called "Cut Co").

I guess they say I get paid $15 per appointment, or 10% of orders over $150.. (which ever is higher) now according to them, the average order is $250 and 3 of every 5 appointments end up in a sale. I have an extremely hard time believing this, not to mention the time between appointments was never specified. I feel like I could work a steady 10 dollar an hour job and make more.. (If there are two appointments, each take an hour to do + a 30 minute travel time would equal 7.50/hr if there wasn't a sell of at least $200 every two hours)

They've already scheduled me for a training seminar thats supposed to begin later today, should I even bother & tell him thanks but no thanks? Or are these types of jobs actually worth something?

Edit: I just found this link, after simply searching "vector marketing", its the third result.

I'll be reading this while hearing your comments. Thanks yall.

Vector is pyramid bullshit. Have they told you you have to purchase your sales kit yet? That's essentially what the training seminar is - them sales pitching their knives to you.

Getting offers are not a problem but first see if they will really pays you or not.

i heard so many complaints about my friend, they worked very hard for one month after one month they have not received any payments. So be careful.

That petition website was wonderful! Over 10,000 personalized negative comments about this company, and some are very descriptive - almost explaining the exact situation I was in up to this point.

I have the training seminar in 4 hours, but thanks to them and you guys - I'm probably going to pass on these jerks. I'm really glad I caught this in time. Now I'm at the point where I'm wondering if I should make the trip anyway and take all the negative comments in that petition and turn them into rhetorical questions and just have them act like idiots trying to not look stupid.

I canceled it.. I shoulda just not said anything and let them think I was coming - as they had no paperwork on me at that point. I "got the job" before they even saw my resume, references, previous work experience, or anything else.

I may have gone if they offered free food?

🙂 doh! Didn't think about that.

I think this is more a sham thread...Cutco and Vector have been talked about many times.

It's not a ponzi or pyramid scheme...however; most people are not salesmen so they blame the company for their own failures.

If you don't have a big circle of friends chances are you don't have the social skillset to be in sales.

Stick to farming gold for games.

This reminds me of Cutco. My son got involved until I found out about it and put an end to this nonsense.

I would not be disappointed if Cutco got swallowed up by a big hole ... never to be heard from again.

This IS cutco...

While it's true that a good salesman with lots of contacts CAN make decent money selling the knives, MOST people fail...and get stuck paying for their "Demo Kit."

So what do you do after you sell all those knives to your "big circle of friends".

Stop trying to make this sham sound like its a viable job. Temporary maybe, but you cannot do this job as a career. Its a waste of your time.

yeah alright dude. Whatever you say. So who are these people making the big bucks selling these knives? Are they the ones at the top that dont sell them and get all the people below them to sell them? Pretty sure those are the ones making the real money.

Ive never met a 'wealthy' Pampered Chef Salesperson.
Ive never met a 'wealthy' car salesman.
Ive never met a 'wealthy' Passion party holder.
Ive never met a 'wealthy' Avon salesperson.

These are all scams in an effort to get the people at the top the most money.

Quit trying to make personal insults and actually make a valid point. You are just saying that there are people out there that are just loaded off of this. And you are saying these people are specifically only selling knives. Show me one.

And FYI, I sell a lot more shit per month than you can dream of. I just do it thru other means (Adwords, MSN, Yahoo). There are lots of different forms of salesmen out there, and this one is a scam that you should stay away from.

While it doesn't qualify as "WEALTHY," my wife used to net between $4000 and $5000/month selling Avon...only a tiny part of that was from her "downline." THe bulk of it was from her direct sales...and she worked part-time at it. (between 25-30 hours/week)

There IS good money to be made in sales...IF you're the sales person type.

Me, I'd fucking starve as a commissioned salesman.
